I am looking for any info on Han-Satsu notes. Originally issued by samurai clans of the 19th century using wood block plates. Need info on authenticating pieces.
i am not sure but long time ago i think my friend told me those notes are kind of rare. but i am not sure. it might be wrong. my friend told me that. Thanks Kc
There is some basic informationa about them (in Japanese) in the Japanese Numismatic Dealer's Association annual catalogs, but I'm not aware of any definitive references in English.
Do you know if these are major targets of counterfeiting? I have no knowledge whatsoever on these articles. I have a very good client that has some, and needs the authentication. To me, they look old, but I know how easy that is to make.
1. Sorry Steve - I'm not into currency at all, and none of my English language references on Japanese coinage go into any detail at all on currency. 2. See #1.
Still looking? Start in the middle: http://www.imes.boj.or.jp/cm/english_htmls/history_09.htm Bank of Japan Currency Museum Online. Also, there are, of course, expert dealers, such as Joe Boling. And he has this online presentation at money.org http://www.money.org/bolingexhibit.html This is a real problem for a dealer. You want to serve the customer who is offering these for sale. You want to buy them and then, of course, sell, them, but you do not want to buy bad merchandise. So... The rock and hardplace situation is that a dealer has to be a generalist, whereas the collector has the luxury of specialization. At least you have some HOPE with these Han-Satsu. Imagine if they were Babylonian clay tablets! (Don't laugh... I've been asked...) Michael
