colonial large cents

hey guys im lookin for a lil info to help out a co-worker.. he brought me in two coins to look at and i didnt really have any idea what they were except that they were cents from those dates. i did a lil research on them but didnt find out too much. well the first coin was a 1787 new jersey colonial thats in kinda rough shape. anyone know how many of these were minted or any info on them? also possible price. the other was a 1793 liberty cap thats in decent shape. u can partially see a part of where the beads once were but other then that the details are pretty sharp and still has the wrighting on the rim. i geuss there were only 11.000 of these minted? any info would be greatly appreciated. also key points for authentifacation?

the 1787 im not sure about, but the 1973 What does the reverse look like?does it have a chain or a wreath? and on the side does it say anything?

 

im pretty sure it was the wreath i cant remember for sure. and on the rim i cant remember exactly what it had i think it said one hundredth of a dollar or something like that?

 

alright, thats what i needed to know. from you description, I would say it is genoursly F-12 grade, worth about 5000, but I would take it to an exxpert to get it graded. the price is from the 2011 red book.

hes actually my supervisor and i just started the job a week ago so tomoro im going to tell him ill give him my whole check for the coin and see if he takes it haha. im kidding i couldnt let him sell it to me that cheap...or could i?

 

There are a lot of varieties of New Jersey coppers, so we'd need a pic of it to see if we can attribute it for you. There are several excellent "colonial guys" on the forum, and I'm sure they can help you. We'd like to see a pic of the 1793 also.

It's very possible these are replicas. You need to post pics to get them authenticated. Also, how did he have these? Where they jingling around loose in his pocket? Airtites? Many of these are slabbed, and raw ones are usually protected somehow. If they were loose, and he's a non-collector, signs seem to point to fake.

 

Yep - need pictures of that 1793 liberty cap - a rough one of those can be worth thousands.

 

if i can get pics i will but my phone kinda sucks lol. the new jersey is in a 2x2 and the 1793 is loose. im going to stress the fact to him to get these authentified. he isnt really much of a collector. i will be trying to get the full story this evening

This is what I was going to say.

 

As Lon Cheney stated, they very well could be replicas. Both coins have been collectible coins for well over a hundred years. I would be surprised if it was loose. Both of these were reproduced as novelties before the Hobby Protection Act came into law. We would need decent photos to try to help you.

 

okay ill do my best to get some photos. for u guys.. but if that fails are there any key points i can look for for reproduction?

 

Look at the edge. Most of these reproductions were cast, and there will be a seem all the way around the edge. If there is a seam, you know its a reproduction. There are other signs, but that is the easiest to explain to you sight unseen.

 

It really depends on how it was reproduced.

 

If it is actually a 1793 Liberty CAP then it is going to be worth a lot more than $5K. Pictures are going to be VERY important on this one.

 

I'd really suggest trying to take good photos and posting them here. There's some experts here on early US coinage, that know to look for die pairings, and things like that. I, however, am not one of those experts.

 

he dosnt have a good camera or a scanner and dosnt seem interested in me taking it home and using my scanner...but he may because he wants to see if its real now that he knows what its worth. he also dosnt feel like spending the dough to send it in...he said he got it from is grandfather in a wooden box with the new jersey colonial and some baseball cards...i want it! when we didnt know what it was he almost sold it to me for $20 but didnt because of the sentimental value..good choice on his part

 

okay so the cent is a 1794 but he did let me take it for photos! . the rim reads one hundred of a dollar and after dollar it seems to have a leaf?
