I see a lot of hype on the web about Vam silver dollars and I have several that would qualify as Vams. However, when I've taken such coins to dealers, when I mention the word Vam, they looked at me like I spoke in another language and stopped me short. Is the Vam thing just a bunch of collectors that just happen to be into major/minor detail errors or are these coins really more valuable than a regular non-vam? I've noticed PSCG acknowledges some vams, but there seems to be more than you might care to look at in some years
ALL MORGAN AND PEACE DOLLARS ARE VAM'S. A normal die pair is usually assigned VAM-1. There are a lot of the VAM's that can be quite valuable, but many are not worth too much more than the value based on the condition of the coin. Most dealers don't want to mess with them because it takes too much time to identify many of them. In some cases, you have to examine them under very high magnification unless you are quite familiar with the diagnostics (markers or PUP's). Both PCGS and NGC limit the VAM's that they will attribute, and ANACS will attribute all of them. Chris
