Anyone have a clue about what may have happened to this penny? I almost tossed it aside, thinking it had been mutilated after leaving the mint, but upon closer examination realized it might have gotten mangled during the minting process. Has anyone seen one like this before? Thanks, Mari

It looks like it was chewed up by a lwn mower or something then somone found it and may have heated the coin up to smooth out the imperfections.
    That's just a guess.

    That's what I thought at first ...

... a lawnmower, or run over by a Mack truck ... sorry the picture is so bad - when I reduced the size to attach the file, much of the (mangled) detail got lost. So, has anyone ever seen an error penny that got mangled & melted like this during the minting process? I can email you a better picture if you're interested. - Mari

No..not a lawnmower. Looks more like those found in parking lots or roads after a zillion cars ran over them. I have silver that has been gone over by mowers and they all show blade cuts unlike her cent.

    Mari 13,

Sorry to say it but the coin is Roadkill! I mean that literally as I find many just like it in Parking Lots of Convenience Stores where they have been run over a few times. Hey, even these spend but I only pick them up if they are heads (Obverse) up as I somewhat believe that old superstition about not picking up coins that are face down (Reverse side up).

Looks like a candidate for the melting pot as it is a pre 82 copper cent worth 1.5 cents. :D

More pics of '67 mangles cent

Thanks for all the feedback, folks. Here's a few more pics w/ close-up detail of what I have fondly come to call the "Lava Penny" because all the features look so melted. The thing the made it look different from a few others I found is that all the features look melted as well as mangled. Does anything like this ever happen during the minting process, or is "roadkill" the only possible explanantion? Thanks, Mari

IMO its only post mint damage. Maybe due to the thin layer of copper on post 82 cents? But I do like the term you coined "Lava Penny". How about Lava Cent?

Hey Scotto - I do like that better, but I'll let you decide between: Lava Cent or Lava Lincoln - whatcha think? - Mari

That's Great, Scotto! "Lava Lincoln" is now this coin's official title. Even though it's a pretty funky-looking cent, I think I'll hang onto it. I found more than a few very scuffed-up pennies in our "collection" when I emptied the 'ol water jug, but this was the only one with this melted look (out of over 200,000 cents!).

Anyway, sometimes coins have a value beyond their face or collector's price, ie.:

    1967 "Lava Lincoln" - 1.5 cents

Using photo of 1967 "Lava Lincoln" to learn how to crop and size photos: *priceless* (especially for a techno-spaz like me

    Have a Great Day!
