I've got a nice pcgs holder d MS63 Peace Dollar (paid $55.00) with some nice purplish toning around the edge interspersed with blue flecks on both sides. There are also some major die cracks on the obverse from the "L" down thru the I"IN" to the "1" and on the reverse right thru "AMERICA" on the reverse. I guess my question is this, the holder itself is really scraped/scratched more so on the obverse than the reverse. I am not a member of pcgs other than the monthly coinfacts subscription. What might my options be for just spending a little money for re-holdering/VAM checking (I'm pretty sure it is one of them at least). There are no dealers nearby or within 30-40 miles in any case. I will try to get some photos attached. Thought I would toss this out awhile.
Not at this point as I just picked the coin up today. I've been eyeing it for a few weeks deciding if I wanted it and today it was 10% off so I went for it...
It will cost you about double what you have in it to get a membership and submit the one coin to be attributed.. BTW a bottle of Mequiar's PlastX to take care of the sctraches on the holder is less then ten bucks at most auto supply stores.
That was the reason I had asked since the cost of membership would make it rather cost prohibitive, at least right now as I don't really have enough raw coins to consider sending them in. How good does that PlastX work on these holders?
Oh and to find out witch vam it is try here....http://www.vamworld.com/Top+50+Peace+Dollar+VAMs PlastX will take out most scratches on PCGS coins if it is a deep cut not likely to get it all out. I been using the same bottle on over 500 slabs as I normally buff them before imaging. One drop normally does a slab.
No deep gouges just light surface scratches but it does detract from the look of the coin, especially the tone. I have the website for vams saved but with the scratches on the holder sometimes it is difficult to see clearly so will get some of that cleaner and give that a try then post some images....... Thanks...
Guess I will post the image now, though the photos are not that great... But there are a few heavy die cracks on both the obv and rev which was a surprise along with some of the color. View attachment 137099
Wow. I'm impressed PCGS cleanly graded that. I collected Peace dollars for a long time and I can't say I've ever seen one like it. It sure is different, and I'll bet you could easily recover your $55. Some folks will go nuts for it! Definitely try Meguiar's PlastX polish, available at most auto parts stores. It does wonders for cleaning up scratches that aren't too deep. I would worry about reholdering. PCGS may change its mind about the color. Sure, their guarantee will protect your money but I am sure you'd rather have the coin. (Someone may debate whether PCGS would BB with a reholder. I think the odds are low but it can happen, according to Don Willis. He has also spoken directly about colorfully toned Peace dollars, suggesting most all are AT so I think there is a bias to overcome.)
Must say - I agree about PCGS slabbing that one. I am truly surprised ! Not saying I think it's AT at all, just surprised they didn't. Do me a favor, post pics of the entire slab, both sides, if you would please. I'd like to see how old that slab is.
Yep, I would truly be surprised if PCGS would even grade that coin again. I would also be surprised to find out it's not AT, I think it is but that's JMHO. good luck
I'm trying to get shots now of the whole holder on both sides.. hopefully I can the lighting the same as the other images. I was following the guide for editing photos posted on here.. Now it looks totally different based on my editing to make it clearer and helping it not look washed out as someone said in a different thread.. Guess the first pics were my stupid editing abilities at this point...
Hopefully it wasn't to darkened in the first image compared to this one. It looks different now with the whole holder than when I was editing just the coin up close...Don't want anyone thinking I was photoshopping the pics beyond getting it clearer and sharper..
Hmmmm - that slab is fairly recent. I can't pin it down exactly as to date but certainly within the past 5 years or so. And that makes it even more surprising. Maybe Conder will reply with a closer date.
