estate coins, penny error, 1909 s vdb, ADDED 1922 NO D

    Hello,

My grandmother inherited a coin collection several years ago and now I am going through it for her. I am new to coins, but have done quite a bit of research in the last couple weeks. I have posted some pictures of some that I am not sure about. I also have a 1909 S VDB wheat penny were the VDB is pretty much worn off. I can see it with a magnifying glass and the right light, but it is basically gone. It is well worn but I was wondering what the value might be? Any info would be appreciated.

1909-S VDB - Suspect authenticity, cleaned, damaged. To assign a value it would have to be authenticated.

1958-D - Common coin, AU grade, about 10 cents.

    1966 - Off-center error, about $15-20

Last coin - I have no idea.

Pretty cool lot, The 09 looks pretty good, should be certified for authenticity, but the reverse rim damage might be a problem for it to grade cleanly and might details grade. I would grade the obv at vf 25-35 but I hav a problem with that reverse ding and so would any buyer, so I would put its worth somewhere between 4 and 800 in my opinion if real. The 58 D has a weird rim and can't tell what is up with that but don't think it would add any value. The 66 off center is interesting, prob a 10-20 dollar coin. The other metal glob might be an ancient, but is probably industrial waste and a reason I don't collect ancients. Hope that helps, Just my 2 cents, Matt

1909-S VDB - Everything I see says it is authentic but damaged, but an expert in hand could give you a better idea. If real, it would be something around $900. Weak VDB's are not that uncommon, but they do hurt the value. I doubt that it has been worn just there.

1958-D - I am not an error expert and I cannot tell quite what is going on with that coin. Have you weighed it?

1966 - I will take Thad's word and I also have no idea what the last one is.

I agree with all of that but the price of a 1909-S VDB. If ANACS G6 cleaned goes for $500 - $650 (and I just looked), that one has got to be more

rlm, Just trying to be realistic as to what a dealer will be willing to pay, or what he will pocket after ebay fees....Matt

Wow you guys are fast! I am not sure the last coin is a coin, it was just in the box. It sorta looked like a really worn three pence or something, but could be nothing. I am planning on taking some coins to a dealer or two to get some ideas on the grades. I have been concentrating mostly on the silver dollars, half dollars, etc as they are a little easier as they are mostly silver melt price, but have a couple books of wheat and indian head pennies to go through.

Any recommendations as to a grading service?

If it grades, I would go with PCGS, but I would guess it will not. Otherwise, either NGC or ANACS. Don't know what you have for dealers in you area, but someone there should be able to give you better answers when they see it in hand.

    1922 plain

I took a picture of a 1922 plain to see what everyone thought. Is this considered a strong obverse or a weak one?

If the 09 and the 22 are real and grade it would seem you will be doing rather well on those, congrats~~

I weighed the 1958 D penny and it is 3.5 grams on my scale. I weighed some others around 3-3.1 grams.

Wild stab, but a capped die became uncapped? I am shooting in the dark. You might post that in the error section and maybe Mike Diamond will have an idea.

Your grandmother inherited nice coins, 1909-s vdb and 1922 are the top values for lincoln cents.

Dick, did you see the letter 'M" above the second "U" in PLURIBUS in the 09 S. VDB? Nice coins, heck I wouldnt even worry about that 58-d and I would be concentrating on the 09 s VBD and the 22 plain. I think the VDB would get graded as "geniune" but heck i would take that any day of the week to finish my collection

I noticed that ding, but not well enough to see the letter. BTW, the bottom reverse rims is also pretty well banged up. You are correct dollar wise about the 58-D or most likely. But still it is an interesting coin

Thanks to all for the input. I have really gotten into finding out info about these coins and have been doing research for the last couple weeks. I was considering buying them from her as she could use the money, but I think the whole collection is rapidly climbing out of my reach, and that is using G4 from HA as a starting point. There are two sets (dansco 1909 - 1974) of lincoln pennies with the second being in a little worse condition and missing the 09 s vdb and the 22 plain that the first set has. We are planning on going to a dealer my uncle knows to see what he thinks of the whole lot and will probably see what he offers and if I can compete. A bank loan might be in my future!

If your 1909 S VBD coin is authentic it can go ass low as $500 to as high as $1000 dollars. in the condition it would be more towards $1000 if real.

Took most of the collection to a dealer about an hour away today. He checked the indian head and lincoln penny sets over closely and it was his opinion that everything looked authentic. Now I wait and see what his offer is to buy the whole lot and see if I can compete. I am hoping to take them to another dealer to get a second opinion sometime in the next week or so.

The only concern was the 1931 S that is extremely clean with what he called some unusual coloration. I found the package that it was bought in and it was sold as uncirculated, but it might have been cleaned.
