http://www.ebay.com/itm/190572829230?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 According to my books, this star falls outside the serial number range? Unless my books are wrong, this note could be a forged star note. When you think about it that would be very lucrative for someone to make large currency stars, effectively doubling or tripling the price... Anyways, if the note above is real it's at a good price! I expect it to close somewhere in the $200-$275? Well see... SN# B00015880*
The seller is Leon Thornton, a well-known and well-traveled dealer who is highly respected. If you are using the Schwartz-Lindquist book, the serial number ranges given for FRBN star notes are observed highs. See the note at the beginning of the listing for $5.00 FRBN. 24,000 $50.00 star notes were printed by the BEP so this number is actually within the range of printed notes and would be a new high reported serial number. It catalogs at $625 in VF.
Good to know, and I guess I can forget about bidding on it LOL... Heck it's already pushing the high end for what I can afford this month. (Old lady need tires before winter ) But it has me wondering if this is being done. I mean a good forger could erase the letter, have a stamp made from a know star note and match the ink. It would be worth wild for a forger to put their resources to doing just that, and that's scary... Invest $100 bucks, and triple their money on scarce notes? Scary... and to say a forger couldn't fool a top tear grader is unrealistic and foolish...
$474.99!!!!!!!!! Unreal! I had a snipe for $260 just for giggles... Now you see what I'm talking about! Those two little stars had a $375 premium! I'm done trying to bid on the weekends or holidays!
I don't know Doc, the book value is top dollar retail in an awesome economy or at a coin show. Honestly in this environment I did not see this one coming? Well actually I did! Weekend + Ebay = Fruit attack! Maybe $300-$350 tops, but that's just me. Granted I don't see those very often, but I would rather have a plain old $50 Dallas brown seal...
I agree that it is high, but I see the value in these notes rising in the near future, so since it was below book, I think it was a fair price.
My theory; Since buying & selling of these notes are rare it will probably drag the prices down or at least slow the growth a little. I don't know how many of these are sold and at what cost, but factoring in Ebay low balls has to drag the average realize price down. Just something to consider.
