Hi folks - I have a question regarding a 2007 Presidential Dollar Set that I just found in a local swap and shop. The guy running the shop said that its rare due to the fact that it is a set the mint gave to employee's. I don't have a picture unfortunately, but I will try to describe it. The box itself is brown "pleather". Nothing special to it that I can tell. The box opens like a chest and on the inside of the lid it has all the president's pictures from the series. Each dollar is in it's on smaller box that is covered in felt. The box opens like a VHS clam-shell would. Inside the coin is in a graded container. There is a box for each president for the P, D and S mints. The P and D boxes are blue felt and the S are black felt. So 12 boxes in all inside the larger box. I can't find anything about it online. Do you guys know of this or have seen one? What's something like this worth? Thanks for any information. -David
New one on me, and like you, I can't find anything online. I see you're in Nashville...you familiar with Jim's Coin Services in Murfreesboro? Jim's been in the game a long time, and knows lots of these oddball weird one-off sets and such...he might have some info or know who does.
I'd take what the guy told you with a grain of salt............about the size of Mount Rushmore. Unless he has the documentation to prove it, it's just a sales pitch no better than that which you hear on Coin Vault. Chris
I agree with you cpm9ball. And gboulton - I did call Mr. Jim and he basically said the same thing. You take the box away and what do you have, just the coins. I am still curious though as to why we can't seem to find anything about it online.
The mint has made presentation sets for employees in the past but I do not know of a reference source of when or where except for what I saw on Mike Wallaces web site http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page38.html but from what I read it was a single coin.
Well it really depends. You said the coins were graded, what grade and with who? Are they proofs or business strikes? High grade pres dollar coins in both proofs and business strikes can command a bit of a premium, but it's nothing astronomical. As for the story about it being a special set given to mint workers, I'd ignore it. With no paperwork, nothing online that suggest any such thing exists, why would you believe him? Some people will tell you anything for a buck.
