There are a few varieties of this year, but they all involve the "S" mint mark.... and, since I don't collect Lincoln cents, I can't say if this coin is a rarer variety. However, I can tell you there's 2.7 cents worth of copper in your example, and since it's a lower grade, just keep it and enjoy it!
Hi Koinjester, I have checked a number of '46 coins and the top of the four is always aligned with top of one and nine.
Wow, it's been years since I've seen one of these! They're very rare, you should absolutely send this in to ANACS, NGC, or PCGS for slabbing to preserve it. I think the minted population was only 198 million.
Wow, no wonder I could not find any at Coppercoin, Ken Potter Educational Image Gallery and Coin Page Database. I will do more research on it. I found it in a roll my sister sent me last month. I am really excited about it!! Are there any markings that will authenticate it? Thanks Merc Crazy.
The year/mint is not rare by any means. Still a keeper though cause hey, its a wheatie. And a shell-case wheatie to boot. Oh, and its just a normal date btw. Look at the top of the four. Its been cut off by wear and contact. It doesn't come to a point, it just kind of stops.
Hahaha you got me there Merc Crazy. No wonder there aren't any reference or anything written about it. If it had been a variety then the mint must have gone out of it knockers to make a significant change in the font size specially when it will give a weird appearance. Also, when the mint makes some adjustments the changes are so minute such as the large and small dates in the 1970s and 1982s. Thanks for your feedbacks and the education guys. i will keep this coin. Cheers
