Hey toning gurus. I just purchased this great looking Washington silver quarter. What do you think of the color? I know I love it, and I think it was a pretty good price. Care to guess what I paid?

I like the color, but I find many 64's toned well. Most of these were pulled from circulation straight from banks, so are fully lusterous BU, and the rolls and storage options at the time frequently gave them color. I would guess just a tad over spot. I am not insulting the coin, just saying they are fairly common and not collected heavily.

    Chris

P.S. I actually sent one somewhat similar to a CT member here very recently. I just pulled the top one from the roll.

Its a nice coin man. I think everyone was gaming it, thinking you were bragging. :)

I don't think you will regret what you paid, for pretty coins we never do, right? If you like it, (and it is a very nice example), then you got a good deal. I think I am jaded since these used to be common, but I simply do not know how many of these, with the toning craze now, are still around.

Btw I said a tad over spot, so "tad" is somewhat nebulous, right?

    Chris

P.S. To me it looks like album toning on the inexpensive albums. Sometimes the reverse are pure white, other times they get a little air and tone in from the edges like that. I would wager it was put straight from the bank into an old whitman and stay there for a few decades.

lol Chris, it's all good. I paid $25 for it. I am a sucker for any silver coin with green in it. Must be my Irish blood :)
I also agree on it being album toning. Most importantly, I like it.

    Always most important. :)

I always find that if you like a coin a lot, you never get mad about what you paid for it. I have coins I got great deals on I am "eh" on. I have others that at least at the time I overpaid, but they are so dang pretty I simply do not care.

That is a beautiful Washington and if you like it then it was well worth the $25. I found 2 at an estate sale that weren't as nice as this one and paid slightly more then spot for it at the time which I believe was about $4.50 each. But I feel I got very lucky too, I think you done just fine!

Yeah, in the end, if I did overpay, we are talking about dollars here, not hundreds.
My first coin purchase on ebay was an oven baked 'toned' SBA dollar that I paid $16 for lol.

I would like to hear his AT argument as well. I have multiples of these in tubes, taken out of old silver sets sold to coins stores. As I have said, I liked toning and if I could buy it at spot, (which was true of any 1960's washington), I did. Gbroke's coin looks just like them, except maybe a tad prettier than many. I even physically took some out of the whitman's myself back in 1992 going through a dealer's stock.

If that is AT then they are very good, because to my eyes its an excellent reproduction of NT coins that I would personally vouch for, from first hand knowledge.

I didn't want to give my opinion on here gbroke so I sent you a PM. If you like the coin, enjoy it. That's what makes the hobby fun.

If gbroke wants to post my reply by PM, he is more than welcome to do so. However, like I said before, if you like the coin, keep it and enjoy it. I am just a collector who has seen many toners and has learned from other, more experienced collectors like everyone else.

Since you said it was ok, I will post your response. I think it's a benefit to collectors to hear the opinions.

    From tonedcoins:

First of let me start that it is only my opinion from collecting and seen so many coins as such. Second, if you like the coin, keep it and enjoy it, that's all that matters at the end.

My opinion is, towards this quarter that sulfur compounds grant more natural hues, but the colors tend not to blend well. The layout of the colors on this particular coin do not lay correctly. The colors just run on top of the devices. To me, that is one of the first things I look at when purchasing a coin, whether it's graded or not (this is where the term "buy the coin not the slab" comes into play).

If you look closely (for example) at the date area. The blue/green on the beginning of the rim and pink/purple running towards the top of the coin, it goes and travels on top of the date and or higher fields. This IMO is typical of chemical alteration and I have seen many like these before. The toning is also too perfect and natural toning has a more broken color pattern within.

But, like I said before, if you like the coin, keep it and enjoy it. That is what makes the hobby fun.

I respect your opinion sir, having followed toning posts back when Lehigh was here also. I also respect your reasoning on this coin. My "problem" is that I simply have seen these too often. If it was almost any other date I would completely agree with you.

In the 90's, going through sets brought into coin shops containing just bullion coins, this is what you would see over and over. The first page mainly empty with maybe a 32 plain and a few very worn late 30's. The 40's were mainly vg-f, the 50's were vg-vf toward later dates, and 60 and 61 were AU, and the 62-64's were BU, with the 64's especially usually brilliantly toned, or at least toned. I believe what happened is so many of these sets were put together in these cheap folders containing sulphur in the mid 60's that the BU ones simply toned because of the fresh silver and trace sulphur present.

Like I said, make this date 61 and I look at it harder, make it in the 50's and I start doubting much more seriously. Sorry to disagree with you on this point sir, but I just cannot ignore my own personal observations on this date in particular. I have seen toned 40's and 50's quarters, and they usually are splotchier, but it simply seems the 64's toned nice and smooth many times.

We can agree to disagree, right?

in your medoraman, you can sure agree to disagree and I too stick with what I said. It is just not a coin I would touch or buy. However, if Greg likes it, he can enjoy it and I respect his liking and collection regardless.

But I have to ask. Have you ever found a quarter, silver or clad pant pocket after it had been washed? If so, what did you see? I know I've seen very similar toning, not saying this is the case for this particular quarter but it is very similar.

Either way, yall enjoy collecting and thanks for reading my opinion in regards the toning of this coin.

I received the quarter. I really like it. If it is AT, they did one heck of a job.
