At a local flea market, I found a complete "Coin Hobby Starter Kit" (Whitman No. 9735). It contains everything stated on the box cover! It has from 1965 a blue book, cent, nickel and dime folders ( last printed date: 1965 D), US and Canadian coin check list, 2x2 envelopes and magnifier. The box shows signs of handling but the contents are like new! All of this for 5 bucks! Anyone else ever see/remember these kits?

Yeah - but for 5 bucks I might get it for the blue book. I don't remember a starter kit, but then again we never went to coin stores.

Thats a great find,,,Congrads.....I bet what ever coin folders in there are worth more then $5 bucks each, since people collect them and use them to tone there coins because of the sulfur in the folders.

I had my Mom order one from the JCPenney catalog in the early 1970's. Sounds very similar. To this day I keep my best US coins in a little black box that contained 2x2's in the kit, (all except for a few slabs).

That's a really cool vintage starter set. I bought a Whitman starter kit back 20 years ago at a Boscov's mall store in Delaware. Would love to find one similar to what you have.

Thanks kookoox10! It was one of those things you just stumble upon. As a kid, I remember seeing similar kits available at Woolco department stores. They even sold coins!

I remember around Christmastime each year back in the '60s that I would always be drooling over the DeLuxe coin starter kit that was listed for $49.95 in the Sears Wishbook. It had a lot of wheat cents, Whitman folders, and I don't know what else. Unfortunately, Santa never was able to put it under my tree :(

Sorry to hear that. The price was rather substantial in the '60s. You could buy about 200 gallons of premium (ethyl) gasoline for that!

You're right-- that was a pretty hefty bit of change in those days-- enough to buy, as you said, about 200 gallons of gasoline-- or 200 Saturday matinees, or 200 admissions to the municipal pool, or 500 cans of Shasta soda when it was on sale, or 500 candy bars. It would have even been enough to buy a $20 gold piece at the first coin club meeting I ever attended, back in 1967.

I hear ya man. I wish I would have to back in 2000. I remember when I was buying silver at $10 an ounce selling for $12. Wish I still had it all.

I wish I had bought more silver back in 2000 instead of buying that "diversified basket of stocks" that my ex-broker suckered me into.
