OK, with out the comedy and religious references, what is it with the 1886 Morgan? Is it a fake? If not, how do you explain the "X"? It's raised on the coin meaning that is was cut into the die. How/why would the mint have done this and let the coin out into circulation? A little education goes a long way.

So, are you saying it IS a Chinese fake? Maybe it's time to start collecting fake Chinese error coins - I have an 1877 IHC with a double punched date.

If they can get that kind of money for those kinds of errors, maybe I should put my errors up for sale on eBay.

I've got a big jar full of road rashed coins of many denominations. If I lst them as errors on ebay, will I get rich?

I offered him $28. Let's see if he bites.

    UPDATE: He declined!

Oh and I reported the item for listing violations.

Well, I can appreciate his frustration with the grading services. I once sent in an obvious overdate that isn't in the Krause catalog. Was a 1900/1909 Denmark 20 Kroner. The overdate was so pronounced you could see it without a loupe. Yet PCGS refused to make such an indication on the holder, probably because their little play-book didn't have a number assigned to the variety. I think this guy has a pretty neat little coins. A wee bit overpriced, and perhaps a little heavy on the biblical implications, but I don't mind seeing people get excited about their coins. It's what the hobby is all about if you ask me.

Thanks to Siggi and the crew for digging these up!! I've had a lot going on so I was off CT for a few days but boy, you all have been busy (and apparently the ebay gang have been on vacation). Did anybody notice that the morgan appears more like aluminum than any other metal?
I'm gonna go now and get my "rainbow error" Lincolns out, cuz momma needs a new pair of shoes....and boots to go grave robbing in (YES I'M ONLY JOKING) after my history lesson on the "funerary business". And now I've got a sudden hankerin' to watch "Poltergeist"...

The coin is genuine. The X's are "raised" but were not in the die. If you uses a strong sharp object and cut into the coin at a shallow angle it is possible to undercut the surface and create a raised ridge. Typically the "flap is then pushed back down to hide the edge of the cut. Examination of the base of the ridge at a shallow andgle and good magnification will usually reveal the edge. It can also often be noticed at the disruption of the joint where the two cuts cross each other.

Off course it´s good to be excited over coins and off course that´s the beauty of the hobby but ignorance is bliss.

I'm buying ALL of these just as soon as I can reach my banker (he has a really fancy car) because I've got a ton of cash coming to me. I put up several hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place and he owes me a boatload in rent and mortgages! ;)

Your explanation is logical enough, but I can't quite picture why the tops of the X would be flat, and neither of the cuts seem to cross the other at the intersection. One would have been made before the second, and the second would be cut by the first. Or was the knob in the intersection created somehow to hide that?
