I am new to collecting coins. I just purchased this coin online and still have time to send it back. Please tell me what I can look for in a cleaned coin. I suspect it has been cleaned because of its shiny yellow color. I also note what look like abrasions? This is close to the color of the coin: This is the same coin under different lighting: Someone please take the time out to respond. I might not be able to make it to a dealer today. Also if the coin has been cleaned it's my own fault. The auction showed a thumb nail picture so basically I blindly bought it. Thanks in advance
Your pictures are not the best for judging if the coin has been harshly cleaned or not, but based on what I can see I would say it has not. But even if it has been, it doesn't really matter because that coin has no value over and above its gold content. You could scrub it with steel wool and it would still be worth the same.
Might of been dipped I think I see residue on the reverse. But as mentioned it is not high enough grade to be valued over it's gold value and they are nice big hunks of oro puro.
It shows no obvious signs of harsh cleaning...hairlines crossing devices. You say you see abrasions. Can you be more specific? I agree with LindeDad in that it may have been dipped (which is not necessarily a bad or fatal thing, though it can be). Still, its value is based on gold content so I don't think you should worry. If you paid close to "melt" you did fine. Lance.
Thanks so much for the knowledgeable information. Thanks for the welcome. I am very glad to be here. AB
