As soon as I get my Franklin Halves and Peace dollars done (later this year) I was thinking about doing a Type Set. If I do, I will probably use the Dansco 7070. I do have some Proof coins "laying around" that look real good (i.e. 1978-s Ike). Is it okay to use Proof coins in a Type Set? I have never seen it written down anywhere if there were any hard and fast "rules". Opinions anyone.
There is only one hard-and-fast rule about collecting type sets - or any other type of set for that matter - Collect What You Like.
I agree. To me, a type set is whatever you want to make it. I am planning on putting one together of my own design using a binder rather and a commerical made book such as the Dansco 7070. You're building the set for your collection, so only you can be the judge of wither its what you want or not. So, if you to use proof coins in it...go for it.
One of my many Lincoln Cents collections is not only complete but where ever possible there is a proof coin instead of the possible Uncirc coin. A collector/dealer friend of mine saw this and said that is not the way the collection was intended to be made up. In spite of him being a friend I said this is my collection and if you don't like it you can just ............ I've got a few older cars. Someone noticed I had put orange heater hoses on my 1968, 383 Chrysler Engine. I got them cheap. That someone said you shouldn't have done that. I shut the hood and drove away. NONE of his or anyones buisness of what I do with my stuff. This is your collection. Do with it as you like. Be like my son and listen to everyone and then do as you want.
Carl has an interesting point. Its nobody else's business to judge what someone else has done with their hobby. Like I said before, if it makes you happy do it. Plus, who wants the exact same collection everyone else has anyway. Your comment about your '68 Chrysler story reminded me of a simular thing that happened to me. Someone was looking at my Camaro a while back and they asked me what motor I had in it. I told them that I had recently put a 396 in it (replacing the 350 it had) and they gave me this funny look and said that I shouldn't have done that because it isn't a Super Sport. Maybe not...but its my car and I love it the way it is.
Thanks for the replies. I figured that there wasn't any real rules so I'll just use the best I can afford or already have. The way GOLD is going up I probably won't get those additional pages.
Eh, I got them and I'm just a poor 20 year old college student-I figured, "what the heck." Maybe I'll win the lottery...or find them in change (I wonder which is more likely).
