I have what I presume to be a 25 cent size fractional gold coin. One one side is California Gold with a star in the middle. On the other side is an Indian head in full headdress. It is dated 1856 and there is a small loop attached where it could be hooked to a small chain. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Otherwise, I believe there are many on this site who may assist, but heed the warning about copies of this type coin, which might require advanced techniques for authentification. Some of the designs were rather "crude" often viewed by moderns as flawed counterfeits, but when properly analyzed, are found authentic.

I do believe that the often repeated comment that if it doesn't have an actual denomination (Dolllar Doll, or even just D) on it it is not real is true.

As you can tell I am new at this link but will try to figure out how I can get a photo out of my photo album and post it with the query on fractional gold coin. Thanks for your patience and help!
