Hey everyone, Took out my new camera and starting to work with that again, Huge fail about 6MB. I would love some oppinion on the grade Siggi
Looking at the bread feathers on the eagle, they look fantastic. The obverse looks great too. Don't see any contact marks. The NGC would give it an "AU Details" grade, IMHO. Because the cleaning took away the original mint luster. It gets hard, even with good pics, to give accurate hair splitting grades for coins as we get into the top end of the almost uncirculated and mint state areas. Would have loved to see this coin with her tone before the harsh cleaning. Wonder what she looked like.
I agree with Vroomer... the area adjacent to the eagle's wings and between "America" and the wreath almost look like someone took a pencil eraser to it... just like we did back in the 1950's. Still a really nice coin, which, as stated above, will probably grade "AU details".
Hard to be 100% sure from just that one pic, but I don't think its been cleaned. While that toning pattern, (especially on the reverse), looks very similar to harsh cleaning, coins can also naturally tone that way too. These aren't the best pics, but I think this 1878-S graded MS63 by NGC is a good example - 1878-S $1 MORGAN NGC MS Note the toning on the reverse is very similar to Siggi's coin. As for a grade, the big thing would be how muted is the luster, because the coin's fairly clean (hit wise). I don't really think I could give an accurate guess without seeing some other pics.
Raider, It´s interesting that you say it´s not clean as it´s the same toning on the 1895S that got graded AU53.
I could never get that darn tarnish off near the devices with my pencil eraser, no matter how hard I tried! Anyway, Raider is much more versed in this series than I am, so I'll keep an open mind on this one, as it really does look like his posted link.
i dont believe its cleaned and as a grade i would either say AU 58 - MS 64/5. if i saw it in a shop it would definately catch my attention.
Here are two photos from the side, The reverse has a proof like luster. Not strong but there is a whole lot of mint luster on the coin.
If anything, this proves what Doug said on another thread that photos from different angels of the same coin show different things.
It is really hard to even try and guess the grade by pics with that much toning. I don't really see any hits or areas of wear that would make me think it isn't MS. But I think the dark toning would limit it to MS63. Or UNC details. Still a very nice Morgan Siggi.
Nice detailed photo.. might be a 1878-S VAM-2 Broken R in Trust and Open G Someone can correct me if I am not seeing it correctly...
I don't see any wear on the coin so it is MS IMHO. I also don't see many contact marks on it...so I would say it has details of MS64/65. That said, the toning pattern shows this coin has been cleaned in the past.
Sure looks like it, this would be my first VAM Took the oppertunity and used my new macro lense. It´s dark out side now so I was strugling with the focus point and it´s handeld but some nice resaults.
That is what I see but like I say, someone that knows more about vam checking can double check.. first one I have tried to verify.
