Hello everyone, I haven't seen any discussions about NGC's new "Coin Explorer" here so I thought I'd post the link: http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/ I like it & have already found it useful. Give it a look-see & post your comments. Very best regards, collect89
Here is NGC's description of Coin Explorer: This complete catalog has images and specifications for every U.S. coin, including mintage figures and current melt values for all gold, silver, and platinum coins. Detailed descriptions with insightful analysis are available for almost every coin. NGC certified populations are also displayed in simple chart and graph formats. Collectors—and future collectors—can easily find out how much coins are worth and how their values have changed over time using the integrated NGC Coin Price Guide and actual auction prices realized. NGC Registry scores and an upcoming auctions feature guide future purchases. Like other great online tools from NGC, it’s easy to use because of its innovative and intuitive features. Best of all – access to this valuable resource is free to all users.
Thanks for posting. I saw the e-mail and ignored it. I checked out the link you posted and agree it's an awesome resource. Especially for free. It's nice to have the pop reports for free again. They're website has improved tremendously over the past year.
A quick spot check indicates that some of the data is incorrect, making all of the data suspect. For example, the 2005 USMC commermorative MS dollar lists the mintage number at 130,000, versus the actual number minted...49,671: http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/CoinDetail.aspx?CoinID=19789
Not exactly. The 49,671 number only relates to the Marine Corp Coin and Stamp Set which included 1 of the unc dollars. When combined with the individual sales of the unc coins, the total number for the unc coins is approx 130,000.
I checked a few coins and i probably won't use it again. I subscribe to PCGS CoinFacts and the information there is just much more complete (photos, pop data, auction history) than on this NGC website. Sure, I'm paying for that extra info from PCGS, but it looks like I'd have to pay for some of that on the NGC site as well since it appears they don't give me information on varieties and I can't get any population data w/o paying. Also, w/o having the auction data there, it's hard to tell how accurate their pricing information really is. It wasn't clear whether auction data would be free or whether you'd also have to pay for that too once they get that implemented into their site. Subscribing to one coin info website seems like enough for me, especially with the recent release of PCGS CoinFacts Mobile which is really great and included with the regular subscription.
Man, this is a tough crowd. I got the impression that they just launched this program and it was by no means complete. I think they're working on improving it. I'm a member there so maybe more stuff comes up for me? I don't know. It looks like a pretty decent resource to me.
It is a free resouce I agree that it looks like a pretty decent resource. It includes populations, current & historical pricing, past & upcoming auction data, etc. IMHO it is another resource & a pretty good one at that. It is FREE.
From what I can tell, it's a marketing tool to get you to subscribe to their other stuff. I still prefer the free version of PCGS coinfacts. (It's still online, but I don't know how to get to it without actually going through Google to search for it.)
It seems like a nice resource though in some areas very incomplete at the moment.. I am already an associate member so I at least should be able to see all the information.. Will they ever provide values for plus and star designations? Or is there a rule of thumb for adding value to the base grade, say 10-20%??
Agreed, I was looking for some classic commem images myself only to find them missing and no real information on auctions or descriptions.
Hello North Korea, The next time that you are on PCGS Coinfacts (free versioon) would you please copy the link & send it to me? I would appreciate it.
Also, many of the varieties for the variety plus section have no information listed at all other than a scant census comment..
Coinfacts free version http://www.coinfacts.com/ Be forewarned that every few pages it will freeze and start loading a nag ad trying to get you to sign up for the pay version. While it is loading just click anywhere out side the ad and it will disappear and the page will continue loading. The number of pages you can view between appearances of the ad varies from between 3 and about 8 pages. It will also pop up when you first visit the site.
