I saw this listing on EBay and wondered if it was genuine or not. This listing is from someone who I know had a fake SCD on EBay. If it is fake, please tell me why it is fake.
They might better tell from the auction; http://www.ebay.com/itm/1864-INDIAN...99?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item43a921b973
I'd say at the very least the coin has been VERY harshly cleaned. The surface appears to be pitted... ??? Maybe it was dug from the ground, and scrubbed clean. Looks real to me, but seriously damaged by mishandling.
I'm a SCD collector - do you have a link to the auction with the fake SCD? Generally, these are fringe enough that there aren't a lot of fakes floating around (and I really hope that hasn't changed).
seller has 1 neutral feedback in 12months....and its bec of "inaccurate descriptions" with a cleaned coin and seller refused refund....even if its real, not a coin to have in your collection
IHC looks real for a 1864 cuni, but agree looks cleaned, slightly porours and a little over priced. Just my opinion.
To my untrained eye it look real. I'm comparing it to an 1864 I have with very similar wear that cost me $10 at a show. The D looks odd. Also, the numbers in the date are very tight, but that might just be due to the resolution and glare. The picture is poor - probably from a flatbed scanner so it look flat, harsh, and unnatural from the lighting. It might look a lot better in hand.
