56 Washington. What caused this?

    Pilkenton almost uncirculated

    I got this quarter in a lot from eBay. What caused this? The other side is OK, but the edges are darkened also.

    I'm certainly no pro at this, but I'd guess that it is toning caused by some kind of holder.

    As mentioned a holder of some type or possibly a end of roll coin that did not get flapped down.

    I would guess that the quarter was taped to something. That would explain the perfectly straight lines and thae fact that the toning is on the edge as well.
