So, were the graded coins actually WTC recovery coins?

I have been looking for a list of all the certified coins from WTC...including all the gold and what grades they were slabbed as. Do you know where I could find such a list? All I have is the ASE list.

I hope to god nobody actually buys that crap. Both literally and figuratively.

I don't see anything wrong with it...it was at a historical event, just like coins from shipwrecks. I personally wouldn't pay a large premium for them...but I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

I agree. It's just like any other hoard or salvaged coins from a historical disaster. It sounds like the money was donated towards the victims and people paid premiums for them because they were limited. I can see the allure of wanting to own a peice that represents the "never forget" and "perserverance" feelings that the event inspired.

That's fine, if that's the reason you want to collect them, and you do it solemnly and quietly I don't have a problem with that. It's when people buy them looking to make money on them is where I take issue, especially when they post that they hope the 10th anniversary would boost the value of them.

Remember, this tragedy only happened ten years ago, not hundreds like the shipwrecks. There are lots of people around that the mention of the WTC still causes a lot of pain for. To do that for the reason of making profit is very insensitive and obscene in my opinion.

I have read that the coins raised upwards of 40,000 for victims and families.

For many of the people working at the WTC when it was attacked, making obscene amounts of money was what life was all about. Or did you think those bond traders on the 100th floor were only engaged in philanthropic works of charity? Hardly. I suspect most of them would quite approve of making a buck off of it. No doubt they would have made money from it themselves if they had the opportunity.

Nothing wrong with it, like Desertgem said. I wouldn't pay a big premium for it.

I agree, those prices are VERY steep....but as Camaro says, they were salvaged and transported to PCGS. It's documented that it happened this way, so they are legitimately from 'Ground Zero'. I own 1 2001, BU, no grade.

These coins have a certain stigma to some collectors....to others, they are an important piece of history. I'm in the latter group.

Unless they have a document authenticating these were actually in a vault in the WTC on 9-11-01, it's worth melt +$5 nothing more.

I believe that's what the PCGS slab stating they were recovered from the WTC means.

I'm not sure how I got on the NewYorkMint email list but it seems that all their coins are pricey. I saw the WTC slabbed ASE's and thought they were a historical coins that were overpriced. In this case, if you buy the coin without the slab, you're not getting the authentication that proves it's historical significance. I don't see anything wrong with collecting these slabbed coins if you're willing to pay the price.

Agreed. But, even though these slabbed coins do command a premium...there is a "fair market value" for that premium. The email's prices are way above that. Anyone who buys the coins from them is getting burned.

My beef is with the overall approach to the advertisement of these coins.
Collectiong the Ground Zero slabbed coins is great.
BUT, the tasteless email and advertising on their site was poorly timed and ill conceived, IMO....

I'm in the market for these but not at that price. WOW.
