I do not know much about the early European coins but most, if not all of them, appear to be Austrian in origin! Since Austria and Hungary were ruled for a very long period as one realm, they could have origins from either. I am sure that someone will come along and be able to identify the coins for you. Frank
They're 17th-18th century French....from some of the Louis' including the 14th.The inscription on at least one says Louis XIIII by the grace of God,King of France and( Navarre)? Not really my area of expertise and I'm sure several of our members can ID them exactly.
Hello Islamic-coins The two first are jettons, minted in France by Louis XVI (#1) and Louis XV (#2) Cucumbor
Oui,oui. and #3 seems to be a jeton of "Her Majesty Queen Marie Caroline Luise Josephe Johanna Antonie of Naples and Sicily, Princess Imperial and Archduchess of Austria, Princess Royal of Hungary and Bohemia, Princess of Tuscany"...and if that isn't enough, daugter of Maria Theresa of Austria AND sister of Marie Antoinette of France...LOL
Doug, that was my first thought too,but its a girl.Carolina not Carolus. I think it's CAROLINA D.G.H.B REG. Dei Gratia Hungary and Bohemia,Regina..1752-1814 I could be wrong since she was queen of Naples and Sicily but only princess of H&B?
The portrait DOES look amazingly like Charles from the Spanish reales and I don't recall ever seeing a female portrait wearing a laurel wreath crown but the factor that clinches it in my mind is the REG for regina=queen. Gotta be a woman.
The jeton certainly looks as though it could be Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples during Napoleonic times (and an ally of the Brits). However, I wonder who the Johann Adam Vogel is that it appears to refer to on the reverse? I'm also wondering why the legend is DG (Dei Gratia) M.B. (Mag Brit aka Great Britain?) REG. I'm just not sure either way and jetons of italy are a blank for me. Just out of interest, my history is a bit rusty in this area but who was the state of Carolina named after again? The jeton appears to be of the same style as the typical Nurnberg jetons of Krauwinkle or Laufer. Ian
They are all french jetons. The first three are of the type manufactured in Nurnberg Germany for use as reckoning counters (using a checker board and principles similar to the abacus). The latter was made in France itself for the War Ministry of Loius XIV (Extraordinaires des Guerres) as a `jeton de presence'. These were also made in silver. I don't have my references at hand but I can say that all seven of your jetons, while collectable, are in pretty poor condition and not worth more than a dollar or so each. The latter one being worth between $3-$5
Well, another possibility is that it is Queen Caroline of England, wife (and first cousin) of George IV.The time frame is correct and after the divorce scandal she is reputed to have said. “Carolina Regina in spite of you all.” --Queen Caroline of England, 1820 Oh yes, there is a possibility #3...it might be the first Queen Caroline, wife of George II 1727-1760. THE NAME: North and South Carolina were one colony until 1729. Carolina was named to honor Charles IX of France and then Charles I and Charles II of England. Carolina is rooted in Latin and comes from the word Caroliinus. This word is derived from the name Carolus, translated as "Charles."
I would (judging from the likely time frame of the jeton) plump for option #3, Queen Caroline wife of Geo. II. Much more likely. That style of jeton simply wasn't around much after the 1760's. I'm still intrigued by the `Iohann Adam Vogel' reverse. I can find no reference to such a person during the time frame noted. Ian
There is almost no reference to anyone of that name on the internet that I could find...except two.In a geneology website,I found a reference to a guy by that name who was a patron (godfather) at a christening in Germany in 1778 which would put him in the right time frame..here is what it says: "Johann Adam FASSIG was born in Frei-Laubersheim, Hessen, GER 15 Feb 1778. He was christened 18 Feb 1778 in Frei-Laubersheim, Hessen, GER (#vcFL; Patrons: Johann Adam VOGEL and Anna Catharina?." the other is this short reference: "Johann Adam Vogel born 21st May 1729 in Nordeck Germany married Elisabeth Nau. Johan died in Nordeck 30th July 1805" What do you want to bet this is our guy?
