Annoyed with Coin Shop

I think I just need to rant for a moment. I'm not going to name the shop because they actually have a pretty good reputation from what I have heard, but I'm a little irritated right now. This is a shop back home and I don't go their that often because I have typically found them to be rude and pushy. But, they are the only dealer in the area that has a PCGS membership so on the rare occasion that I want to submit a coin...I go through them. I['m currently living in a bigger city 100 miles away and I could probably use someone here, but I have used them before so I'm more comfortable.

So, I dropped the coin off with them at the beginning of July. It is a foreign coin so he told me it might not go out for a few weeks so maybe they could include it with a couple more coins and save on shipping. Apparently PCGS requires foreign and US coins to be on different invoices so he said that might cause a little delay in sending it out. I hadn't heard anything for a while so I called them a few weeks ago and get one of the lady's who work their. I quickly explained that I had dropped off a coin and wanted to know if there was any update. Her response was (somewhat rudely)..."I'm sorry, it's really busy here right now...please call back later, [click]" and the phone hung up. I was kind of mad, but also busy so I didn't get a chance to call back until today. Called today and the same lady answered and this time put be on hold. Someone else picked up the phone and I explained the same thing and he said I needed to talk to the owner because he handles all the PCGS submissions. So, once again I was on hold. A few minutes later I asked the manager about my coin (which was literally dropped off on 7/2/11...and today is 8/30/11) and he said he hadn't sent the coin in yet. He said they had been really busy at the store and hadn't sent out anything to PCGS for awhile. He said he was going to drop them off at the Long Beach Show next week and then there would be about a month turnaround.

I wanted to pull out my hair. I have been waiting for two months for my coin and to find out it hadn't even been shipped out yet really irritated me. I really don't like this shop.

Sounds like you need to find a Shop closer to were you are now or get your own membership and get things done for yourself faster. The shop I go to, the last time I went in I asked about grading. The owner told me his price but also told me he doesn't like sending them because he is responcible for the coin while in his posession. It's like, Ok then if you dont like doing it then take it down from your web page and just inform people that you no longer do it, end of story. Why give people the run around.

Ask for your coin back and find another shop. They obviously don't care about your business.

Just a suggestion, there are several members here who work in or own coin businesses - I know of a couple of them from several transactions and would rather go through them than just blindly dropping my stuff off at Mr. Cranky's coin shop and waiting months and getting "service" like that. So might consider taking the discussion over to the BST and seeing if one of those members will work with you.

I have to wait months usually though my shop, but it's only $25 to piggyback on his submissions. Personally, I don't mind waiting even though it has once taken almost 8 months. I've never been in a hurry because the graded coins are usually just for my collection and they'll just be sitting around anyway. If you trust the dealer, sit back and wait it out.

    Yup. 100% agree.

This is also why I don't submit through dealers because you put your coin on THEIR time.

I tried to save money by letting others submit my coins, but it just became a hassle so I joined both NGC and PCGS...besides I like the extra research material the sites have for members.
HOWEVER, I'm now an NGC member exclusively (a POX on PCGS). :dead-horse:

I joined PCGS as a "platinum" member ($250) so I would have access to ALL their site's content. If they offered a better membership, I would have taken it...the point was, I wanted access to all their site's content with one membership...not this nickel & dime crap!

I later found out that their Coin Facts section requires a separate membership ($12.95/month). To **** with those shmucks...that's the last nickel they'll ever see from me!

I can't afford the big memberships at pcgs so just have the coin facts membership and then joined ngc yearly for submitting...

Well you just proved the point once again that you can't rely on anybody to get something done (or done right) except yourself. This holds true for just about every situation in life.

I just submitted a coin at the ANA show for a cross over and had it back in my hands, re-graded in a new slab in less than 24 hrs. You probably don't have any big shows coming your way up in Oregon. But that's the method I'd highly recommend for anybody with valuable stuff that doesn't want to fool around.

I'd just start submitting stuff yourself. Either go in with somebody else or wait until you have a good sized order to send. I wouldn't try this experiment again.

Here's the only Top Grading Service that you'll ever need, Check it out!

    NGC GRADING SERVICE

Being a member of this Fine Grading Service, I couldn't help but notice how hard they work to improve themselves constantly. The way things have shaped up, they are a even-match or better than Pcgs grading service.

"PCGS" always seemed to be the #1 Grading Service. always getting abit more in premium/value from their coins. Not taking anything away from "PCGS",because they are also a top grading service, but this is about to change. "NGC" is a force to be Reckoned-with,getting Larger/Better, so as to be impossible to ignore. All Other'Grading Services need to play catchup to keep-up!

The way I see it, (IMO) "NGC Grading Service " has taken the lead as being the "Best Information Center in Numismatics". Check out the new "NGC COIN EXPLORER" when it's fully completed, It'll be a Standout!

I don't want to speak on their behalf because I don't know this to be the truth... but I know my shop has been busy as heck... It took me 4 hours to write an 10 sentence EMail the other day because we are just that busy. I have had one of MY NGC orders in the safe for 3 weeks that I just haven't got to putting together.

I completely understand they are busy. In my home town, this shop is not only the largest coin dealer but also probably the most popular place to sell gold and silver. With bullion prices being so high in the last few months...I'm sure they have been extremely busy. But, they have still been sitting on my coin for 2 months...and I would think that they could have gotten it out at some point during the 2 months. I guess it's nice that he at least told me that it hadn't gone out rather than lie and tell me "they still have it."
