It is a beautiful design, one of my favorites. But you are right in that it was designed poorly so that the date stood out a bit and is easy to be worn out quick.
Oh, I agree wholeheartedly, it's an amazing aesthetic design, but as a coin, the date region was thought out poorly, and that's what I was alluding to. My nicest Buff is a raw AU '25 I found while going through some bank rolls, and I pull it out once in a while just to look at it. Very eye-pleasing design in AU and higher.
One of our most pleasingly designed coins (IMHO). It boggles my mind, however, that they didn't foresee the date problem.
Thank you guys for all your comments....I agree this is one of our best looking designs on a coin.....I wish they would have pit the date some where different I have all these beautiful and don't know how old they are
Uhhh, Buffy's came out in '13, SLQ's came out in '16... So given their experience with the Buffalo Nicks, they should have recessed the date on the SLQ. If that's not what you meant, well, it just goes to show the importance of a comma.
I'm not at all sure where a comma would have made a difference. Anyway, Standing Liberty Quarters were minted from 1916 through 1930. Buffalo Nickels were minted from 1913 through 1938. In 1925 the date on the quarters was recessed to alleviate the problem of excessive wear. Therefore, the mint recognized that type of problem and should have done the same with the nickel, especially since they recessed the "Five Cents" almost as soon as production began in 1913.
That's just what I was going to mention. Then we would have had, raised ground, raised shoulder, and lowered ground, lowered shoulder varieties, and maybe even a mix in between. It would have been justified. They really only fixed 50% of the future problem in 1913 and never looked back. I'd guess somebody just didn't want to mess with the design any further.
Vess. Almost didn't recognize ya. Pick up that avatar piece at the Chicago ANA? I've come across many of these dateless beauties, mostly in my youth and at a time when you could still pull them out of the pocket change. The thought of "what date is it"(?) crossed my mind many times. Diagnostics allows some to be identified today, but what of the others? A mystery. Of course, we could apply Stainless's special coin elixur to lift the date......
Sure did. Have been toying with the idea of changing my avatar for a while. Decided it was time and I love the Classic head design. Something different to look at on here.
