I bought an 1804 draped bust half cent plain 4 w/stems and it has an obvious repunched 1/200 on reverse. The obverse grades about f12 while the reverse grade about ef40.

The 1804 Half cent series are one of my favorites. A picture would be helpful.

    Btw...:welcome: to CT.

THX. I'm an old guy trying to find my way through this E-world but this half cent is very curious because I have never found one like it.

Interesting...a picture would sure be helpful. Is this your first half cent or have you been collecting them for a while? Walter Breen has an excellent book on US half cents. I have an average half cent collection and read about them when I can. I don't recall reading about repunched devices...in the minting process, but that's not to say it's never happened.

Again, a picture would be very helpful. If you have a digital camera and can upload your pictures to your computer, I would recommend posting them to a free site such as PhotoBucket, then inserting the IMG link into the CT post...that'll do it!!

    Re:

This is my first half cent. I am an Indian Head cent collector at heart, but I find the half cent interesting. My wife and I are trying to get pictures to upload.

Here's a picture of the reverse which I still don't think you can see the repunch. I can see it so well with a 30 power loop but this picture does not get it there. [IMG]

What would lead you to believe it is fake. I have had offers from 2 local coin dealers.

Very nice pictures, but I hope you can get your money back. Without commenting on appearance of the fraction, both 1804 "plain 4" varieties (with and without stems) should display eleven (11) berries; six (6) left and five (5) right. Your coin is missing the upper most berry on the left branch...not genuine (imho)...sorry.

EDIT: Based on a number of diagnostics, I would estimate that you coin's reverse was patterned after the Reverse "D" found on the Cohen 6 variety.

Thanks for the info. I suppose I should stick to Indian Heads.

Sorry...I wish I had better news. I think genuine half cents are a real bargain at today's prices so I wouldn't give up on them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fakes floating around out there, too.

    Good Luck!

Susan Headley's little experiment at the F.U.N. show (2008 or 2009) and publicized in Coin World shows that dealers can be fooled quite easily. In fact I did it myself with a local dealer, using a bust dollar purchased from one of China's most notorious eBay sellers (no longer a registered user). All of the diagnostics were correct.. 90% silver planchet, proper edge lettering, correct wear and patina patterns... the works. Even after I told him the history, he didn't believe me.

Lol... well, he offered over $900; I didn't have the heart to sell it to him (plus the fact that selling a counterfeit as genuine is fraudulent). Anyway, it's in my "black" cabinet, and has now been stamped "copy".
