1883 nickel. Beautiful coin, but.... sadly, it looks like someone cleaned it. This coin has some amazing details, but there are some obvious markings that make me believe someone attempted to clean it (don't know WHY they would though!). If this was sent in and graded MS, but cleaned, wouldn't that significatly hurt the value of the coin? Looking to see how much this one may be worth, and what a grade would be for such fine detail?
Yup, looks like a "Brillo pad job" was done on that coin. Someone used "No Sense" when they cleaned that "No Cents" nickel.
I think it would be worth about as much as it is right now minus the cost to have it slabbed. You might be looking at negative numbers if you have it slabbed. And it's a nickel not a dime.
@Mcblzr & Conder101: Heh! That's what I get for posting at 2:20 in the morning. Had just finished the other post about the 4 Mercury dimes and still had them on my mind I suppose! Thanks for the replies everyone.
This should be the "poster child" for why you should never clean a coin. And if it's valuable enough to merit it, then send it for "conservation" if neccessary. Such a shame.
