I have an 1878cc Morgan dollar encapsulated in a first generation, small white ANACS holder ("Official ANA") that I purchase on eBay (no returns). When it arrived, I noticed two rim issues on the obverse at 4 o'clock and 9 o'clock which do not appear to be evident on the reverse. What is the approximate technical grade for this coin? Also, would the rim issues preclude it from being crossed over to PCGS or NGC with getting hit with the Genuine/Details tag?
To me, it doesn't look like the dings on the rim would be a problem unless there is something more hidden by the plastic. What grade did ANACS give it? Chris
I can't see anything on that coin that would prevent it from crossing over; however, because it's originally graded and slabbed by ANACS the grade will could go up 1 or down 1 or 2 from the other two TPGs. If it were me, and believe me when I tell you I don't submit coins for slabbing because I don't see justifying the expense, I would leave it in the ANACS holder with the 64 grade it has.
:thumb: I agree there no need for Ngc or Pcgs . A old ANA holder Anacs:thumb: MS64 with a 1878-CC Ngc or Pcgs could down grade it to a MS-63 :kewl:
I'd leave it just the way it is. Too many have been cracked already. There are some collectors who like them. Me, for one! Chris
Thanks everyone. I will go with the consensus opinion: Keep the coin in the older holder and keep the grading fees in my wallet.
