All night Sunday those sets within a set fed my insomnia - you know, for instance, the two piece set (1922-D and the 1922-no D Lincoln Cents) within the Wheat Beard reverse (1909-1958) album or the 1937-D four-legged and 3-legged Bison reverse Nickels within the Nickel album (1913-1938). My thoughts asked, "Since these variety coins exist because of overused dies, overpolished dies or grease deposits, shouldn't there be some coins in the sphere of numismatics that bear some inbetween strikes?" What if your Lincoln Cent Wheat Reverse collection displayed a 1922-D (full D), a '22-D (25% reduction), a '22-D (50% reduction), a '22-D (75% reduction) and a '22-no D Lincoln Cent (5 coins)? If you don't know the reasons behind the production of the '22-D Lincoln Cents and the causes of the missing D on some strikes, click the following link. It takes you to Lincoln Cent Resource's website and explains the whys of the errors and presents photos of the four different die varieties: Die pair #1, Die pair #2, Die pair #3, Die pair #4. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/1922Ddievarieties.html Pondering this "collection within a collection" couldn't it include a '22-D (full D) and '22- No D from each die pair (7 coins)? Further pondering questions the inclusion of the five different percentage coins in all four Die pair strikes (20 coins). OR What if your Bison reverse Nickel collection featured a 1937-D 4-legged Bison, a '37-D 3 3/4-legged Bison, a '37-D 3 1/2-legged Bison, a '37-D 3 1/4-legged Bison and a '37-D 3-legged Bison (5 coins)? Just pondering... Clinker
Interesting collection, but not for the bargain hunters. One problem though. Your 1922 set is only 7 coins. There are no coins from DP#2 with weak "D"'s.
Hi LindeDad: Thanks for reading and pointing out my mistake - it's changed from error to variety. After looking at dictionary meanings of error and variety, I've come to the conclusion that all error coins are varieties, but not all varieties are errors. Clinker
Interesting idea Clinker, a collection within a collection. I agree with you about the "error" and "variety" definitions by the way. Bruce
I think it takes too much time to complete a wheaties or buffalo folder with many over-priced coins, but with these different varieties it will take longer and be more expensive. I think that someone can do this if they want a challenge and has lots of money around.
