MS63DMPL or MS64PL? Which Would You Buy and Why?

Having a bit of trouble deciding whether I should purchase an MS63DMPL Morgan Dollar or an MS63PL Morgan Dollar. Both are of equal value. "Dimple" Morgans are very beautiful... With clear surfaces, so I'd have to find a nice example for the somewhat low-grade of MS63, and on the other hand, MS64PL Morgans are very attractive with reflective surfaces and, with a 64 grade, have very few distracting bag-marks. So, I will leave it up to the always-reliable CoinTalk members to assist me in deciding- Which do you believe is a better investment? :)

    Thanks Everyone,
    Brian

The grey sheet tracks the prices of DMPL coins in MS63-MS65.

In the end, it comes down to marketing and salesmanship, when you want to pull your money out of this investment. Can you talk the PL coin up?? "They graded it MS64PL. It's a bit low. You can clearly tell they were being extra harsh that day. I'd break it out and send it back in if I were you."

I'd get the DMPL because (if it's slabbed) you can always "sell the slab" and the DMPL market has more strength than the PL market.

DMPL if I cared about the investment. The best looking coin as a collector.

Right on. The DMPL carries a premium, the PL not so much. DMPLs sell much better.

As always, beware of general rules. They're dangerous, and exceptions abound. If all you want is a beautiful coin for your collection, just watch for the best one and buy it. Maybe "the one" is a 64PL, maybe a 63DMPL. There are some nice 63s out there.

I would buy the coin that appeals more to me -- as I don't buy coins as investments (they tend to be anything but) but rather because I like them and they fit into my collection.

All that said, and everything else being equal, higher grade is better.

Buy the one with the most eye appeal.

I'm not a big fan of DMPL's in lower grades. Inevitable field flaws -- even minor scuffs, ruin the appearance to me. So if I were looking for one I'd shoot for the highest grade I could afford.

Which is a better investment? Neither, IMO. If you make "investment" a criterium you are bound to be disappointed and it will spoil your appreciation for the coin.

I'd love to know that as well and see photos.. I've been in the same situation at times.. do I go with the 64* or the 65. The only thing that bothers me is the price guide at ngc doesn't price the + or * grades...

what is the average premium on that added designation, as I've always been curious?
