The obvious answer is nothing. If however, there is anything of value, what might that be?

Money, casino chips, and a firearm?

Or maybe they'll find some wheat rolls with Indian head cents on the end.

Although I know most times they are empty - I still always wonder why someone would go through the trouble of building a wall around an empty safe and not just get rid of the safe when they were building. Although, they are big and heavy and probably easier to build around.

Given the circumstances of the previous owners death, I'm going to say he has some books/photos that might incriminate some people - just a guess for fun

    Two possible outcomes:
    1) Nothing. The safe was too big to move so it was just walled in, probably long before his demise. The mafia would not kill a man if they thought he has something of value (?) If anyone else knew about the safe they would have most definitely opened it, or told someone about it if they couldn't reach it themselves.

    2) Something. To protect his property, he relied on secrecy. No one else knew about the safe, and the only "safe" way to hide it is to completely enclose it into the walls. After being killed, its existence has been unknown until today.

You can only hope for #2 :) If so, I'd say it has dollars and/or casino coins, stuff you see normally in casinos (and dollars would have deflated horribly.) But odds are it's empty, or nearly nothing of value.

The original owner was killed in 1986, not 1968. But I have to agree with the new owner of the safe, and it's highly likely that there are sensitive contents inside. Otherwise, why would someone seal a small sized safe within a wall if they weren't trying hide something that was never to be found by someone else. I don't think it's money, because being behind a wall makes is inaccessible...and what good is money if you cant spend it. My thoughts are that it is something illegal that could implicate him for a crime...

I'm pretty sure it is 1968, the reddit post has a typo. It could have money, as he was protecting his asset for a future removal after things cooled off with his debts.

Yes, you're right; it was 1968. I just read the actual article. But they're not certain who the original owner was, as there were many occupants that leased that building over the years.

The article did state that initial attempts to move the newly found safe were unsuccessful. So I'm beginning to believe that perhaps the safe was too costly to move, so they simply built around it. The safe and the aluminum wall joists look to be newer, so perhaps this was done more recently? And unless the original owner of the safe was handy in sheet metal and building architecture, he would've had to hire a crew to build that wall...meaning they weren't trying to keep the safe a secret.

I dunno, these are all total guesses...but I'll be following this...thanks for sharing!

It looks like Mr. Chartrand had a partner...back when.. and a dispute over percentage of ownership (court case.) As I read, it appears Barneys located across the street from Harvey's Casino, which was bombed 12 years after death of Chartrand (also bombing). Makes for an interesting read and speculation..

Can't find much on Major safe company re: history..

Don't you all just love a mystery!

Hopefully, inside of the container, there's an explosive apparatus that should detonate itself if the safe gets opened.

I have no idea, but I'm sure we will see coins claiming to have come from the safe being sold on ebay the next day.
