I received a message from Whitman Publishing that the 2007 Red Book is now available for sail and there is free shipping and handling for now at least. They have the ringed version, soft bound, hard bound and the leather covered editions of this one. All available on the Whitman Web Site. I ordered the ringed and hard bound versions. They are supposed to be ready for shipping now. Anyone else order one yet? Anyone ordering the leather covered version? Anyone buying one for friends or relatives? Now what gets me is this is still 2006 for at least 8 1/2 months. Why are they printing a 2007 edition now? What good will the prices be by the end of the year? In fact what good will the prices be in six months? this makes no CENTS. I know the auto industry starts realeasing cars a several months ahead of time, but what is the purpose of a book of coin values coming out close to a year ahead? Any opinions?
Amazon has the Red Book as well.... Affiliate Links Not Allowed Please Bring your order up to $25 and get Free Shipping and no sales tax... The Spiral Redbook is listed on Whitman site at $14.95 and the Hardcover is listed at $16.95....both with free shipping...but I think they charge sales tax..... LINK Happy Shopping. I do agree.......It is a little ridiculous that the 2007 Edition is already for sale.
Walmart Check out Walmart Redbooks on the web...they are cheaper...but not that $7.88. No free shipping and sales tax will be added if ordered online. WALMART Whatever the case...both are cheap.
From what I've seen in my newbie experience the prices in the Red Book, and most any other price guide, aren't always real close to the going market prices anyway. Price Guides for pretty much any hobby are way overrated IMO. I've got the 2006 version & it's got nice info on different things, but as for prices most things seem to be priced high in the Red Book. So no matter when it comes out are the prices really good anyway?
When people are browsing in book stores, and they see a shelf with different price guides, and one is dated 2007 and the other is dated 2006, most people will grab the 2007 even if it was published earlier than the 2006. So it's just a marketing gimmick. The prices in the Redbook usually seem a little high. They are probably trying to help out the dealers by raising collector's price expectations. Everyone likes to think they are getting a bargain. Price guides seem to become a little more useful when you examine the price ranges for a particular coin over a number of years, then compare it to the current price you actually pay. It helps to have an approximation of how high and low the prices might go over a 10 year period under various conditions.
That's why I don't use my Redbook as a price guide. It's more of a checklist than a guide. I feel the monthly magazines are better used as a price guide than the Redbook.
Carl, what good are the prices now? With silver and gold reaching higher prices daily, a quarter of the prices are obsolete by the time the book begins selling. The information about series is good, but Whitman is decreasing the size of the [now blurbs] for each series and listing fewer and fewer varieties each year.
I"ve been buying the Red Book as close to when it comes out every year since the 8th Edition. I've still got them all. I've never seen them this early in the year. Yes, early like cars, but never this early. I think this is due to all the complaints of errors they received about the 2006 edition. And as to the lack of coin information not in this book, if you check out the Whitman web site you'll see they have now added numerous other books that describes all the details of many denominations. For instance there is the one on Morgan Silver Dollars, one one cents, separate ones for many things so they just leave out much of the details in the Red Book itself. Then they also now have the ringed version, soft cover version, hard bound cover and the leather bound version. As for prices, there are numerous dealers I know that like to open that Red Book to show people what a great deal they are getting with this purchase. However, with the recent massive increase in coin prices at the coin shows I go to and also with individual dealers, the prices in this Red Book will be completely useless. Possilby any mid year Mint releases would also be completely missed. I've got 2 different WalMarts by my house and have never even seen a book section. I'll hve to check out thier web site. I don't know how they can sell them for less than Whitmank, but a dealer I used to know used to also be able to sell them for lots less than Whitman and with him no sales tax or shipping. This is something I'd like to know how it is possible.
I'm in shock. I just went to the Walmart web site. Normal 2007 Red Book is only $10.36, spiral version is only $9.14 and soft cover is $9.14. This irritates me no end. I recently placed an order with Whitman and paid the full price. Can't believe that the pulishers of this book would cheat their customers like this. I'm going to send a really nasty message to their editors. The good part of this is I usually end up buying many copies for Christmas Presents so thanks to this forum I at least know where to get them from. Thanks mamooney. Not as cheap as you said but sure a whopping lot less than the actual publishers charge. Thanks again.
In general when buying books of any kind the publisher is the last place you'll want to get it. To keep retailers happy a publisher is almost always going to sell for cover price as will alot of retail book stores such as Barnes & Noble or Borders. Places like Amazon & retailers who's primary business isn't books (Target, WalMart/Sams Club) will discount most titles 20%-40%.
HI ALL My wife gets all her books a costco 30% to 50% discount they will have the red book in November.
bruce 1947 if you wait until November to buy the Red Book you will probably be buying the 2009 Edition at the rate they are going.
I'm still in shock as to the differnce in Walmart prices versus Whitman. However, the brighter side is no shipping and handling, no taxes. Where I live there are State and local taxes which would also add about 9% so even the super outragious prices of Whitman is not to horible, just miserabale. Also, they did send me a copy of Morgan Silver Dollars, second edition for FREE in appreciation of all the messages I sent them about the errors in the 2006 edition.
