I'm not really a coin guy, but i found this sitting in the bottom of a storage box sitting in a plastic sleeve. I have no Idea how i got it. Is it worth keeping? or should i just throw it on eBay?

That is an American Silver Eagle, contains 1 oz. of .999 fine silver. It's worth $43.52 at current market price of silver. It's value will fluctuate with the trading of silver on the precious metals market.

Worth holding onto if you like it. They sell for up to $5 over spot.

It's your 1st collectible coin!!! Of course it's worth keeping. When you accumulate more coins that you're interested in, in years to come, you'll look back on this coin as a favorite that started you on the path of a fascinating and rewarding hobby.

Hmm looks to be an impaired proof. Still I'd keep it

Proof would have a mint mark.

DOH, Didn't even look. I'm one of them that consider them bullion so I didn't pay too close attention to them.

I have noticed that the early ones have more of a proof-like shine to them.
In the early 90s they went to a softer 'satiny' look. Not that they aren't brilliant, they just don't look 'polished' like the ones from the 1980s.

Why would you sell your first coin?

Well that really depends on if it really fits into your collection or not. If not, there's nothing wrong with selling it. However, I would hold onto it for just a little bit, because we're just about to enter the holiday season in the coming months. Demand for precious metals goes up during that time of year, and such demand can force the spot price up a bit. I wouldn't be surprised to see silver hit at least $50 a troy oz coming up on Christmas.
