    Hi all,

Just wanting your opinions on this 1828 capped half and how likely it would be to recieve an upgrade if I sent it in to NGC? I don't want to get too greedy but there is a hefty difference in value between a 63 and a 64.

Not able to get a good feeling for upgrade from the images. I would not crack it out of the holder in any case. Very nice coin and it really doesn't cost a lot to try.

I really need to invest in a better camera. I used my wife's sony bloggie and it doesn't take the best still shots.

The luster just isn't there for an upgrade.

    Unless it is the pictures

It has almost forever been my opinion that Bust Halves are routinely over-graded to begin with. The one in this thread for example I would grade no better than 58. So an upgrade should be out of the question.

    My thoughts exactly.

If it's worth it to you, give it a shot. Based on the pictures provided I do not see it happening.

Extremely unlikely. I concur with opinions above - don't even think about cracking this one out. It's hard to tell from photos, but there doesn't seem to be much luster.

I'm surprised it received the grade it did. With the high wear on the cheek, hair and the cap it wouldn't warrant an upgrade.

Agreed, there is not much luster. My pictures really aren't that good but all points are appreciated and I'll leave it as is...

    My 2 cents

Don't flirt with an upgrade if you crack it out you could damage it:devil:. Pcgs MS-63 plus the detail is a good grade.

Judging the likelihood of an upgrade even from really good pictures is a crapshoot. I would ask the opinions of a few experts who can see it in-hand.

I probably wouldn't crack it. Not worried about damage -- PCGS slabs are the easiest to crack, but you never know how a raw coin will come back.

That leaves crossing it. You could do that but going from PCGS 63 to NGC 63 is not a smart move. And I don't think you can cross for a minimum grade that is higher than its current grade. (I know that's true of PCGS's crossing rules. I'm guessing it's the same with NGC.)

So you would have to be willing to accept NGC 63 and hope it will go 64. Long shot but possible.

I think a better option is to send it to PCGS for a regrade. It's not expensive and the coin will be cracked by them. Its current grade is guaranteed. So you will either get it back as a 63, a bump to a higher grade, or an email with an offer to buy it back because it doesn't warrant a 63.

I have had many coins bumped from regrades. Don't think PCGS will look for a reason to keep it at the same grade. If it deserves higher it'll get it.
