all of the star notes ive gotten were through circulation. i gained most of mine when i was a cashier and id prob pull 1-3 a week. ones are the most common from what ive seen and it seems 5's 50's and 100's are more rare. there arent any tricks to finding them except maybe asking for your check to be paid out in smaller notes so your handing more notes. you just gotta make sure u check every note you get. if you want to boost your odds work somewhere where u can handle money.

I just asked a teller at my bank if he happened across them to save them for me so I can exchange for face value. He even took it upon himself to save me some red seals and some silver certificates. If you want something just ask around. Another tip I have for asking around is keep a star note or a picture of one on your phone because you may have to show them an example otherwise you will get funny looks.

RJK3 has the right idea. Become friends with a teller at your local bank and you have a good source for star notes. When my sister was a teller she pulled more than I could buy at any one time, and I have a teller now that pulls some nice examples for me. I also have relatives looking, and to her chagrin, my wife as well. I am known to snatch bills to look for stars and even ask family members to see any notes that they have with them. I assume it's a small pain in the rear for them, but I've saved at least 8 examples from being spent that way.

    Star Note Resources

    Howdy,

I'm new to CoinTalk but not new to collecting Star Notes and other currency... You didn't ask, but I wanted to share with you a great Star Note resource: MyCurrencyCollection ... If you collect Star Notes, knowing what run they are from and the run size is going to be important. That website is my first resource. The have a quick Star Note primer as well...

The other website that I frequently access is USPaperMoney.info which has a ton of information that is important to Star Note collectors. For example, they have a downloadable PDF that has a TON of serial numbering info and is a good offline (when you can't connect to the web) resource. Click Here for that PDF. USPaperMoney has some good info about the changes in Star Note serial numbering Here

Lastly, I have put together a checklist of all of the $1 Star Note runs from 1974 through 2006 via Google Docs. It is available by Clicking Here.

And of course, don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have about Star Notes right here in this thread.

Collecting Star Notes is fun! Welcome!

    Doug

Are star notes still being minted or printed now?

Yes, star notes are still being printed by the FED for the 2009 series notes. Depending on the District, they are either printed already, or have the possiblity of being printed in the near future. I'm pretty sure Numbers posted a link to a site that showed the exact month they were printed. I use the following link to see what has been printed so far by denomination:

    I just received a $100 Star note - Series 1999 - BB 00600095

It looks like it's a run of 1.92M. It's in decent shape but has a center fold and one corner fold it looks like a stamp just caught one corner on the reverse. I realize you all would want photos before making any recommendations, but just based on the year and run #s is this something worth photoing/keeping. I don't collect these and I plan on putting the money toward some barber coins

While I collect all star notes, your note is from a large run and isn't in the best condition. If you can afford to hold it, I would to see if it has a premium in the future. But then again, I think Barber series coins would be worth more by then. Buy the Barbers!
