Here is a Philippine 50 centavos coin that has an altered date (No.1). Was 1921 a key date? Is the alteration done post mint? What could have been the original date. Your inputs will be much appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure it is an altered date? 1921 was the highest mintage of the series (1907-1909 and 1917-1921). The '2' looks legit so the only date it could have been altered from would be 1920 which had a much lower mintage.

I am guessing that it is either a weak strike or a grease-filled die and not an altered date.

I see it as an altered date. Also, it looks like whoever did it was trying to copy the no.1 on the left. I might be wrong.

The 1921 50 centavos coin is one of the most common and no one will do a tiring job altering any other 50 centavo coin just to have the date. :) The 1920 is scarcer than the 1921. The '2' in 1921 is typically weak. It's my first time to see a weak '1' though. Still I believe it's just a weak '1', and probably due to circulation, too.

Looks like a filled die to me.
