Does anyone know what a realistic price is for 1954 B 20 Franc coin in XF-45 to XF-49 condition. This was a random find in a bag of 400 coins I bought from a dealer that also contained about 15% old silver coins of excellent value. The price was about 22 cents a coin, which would be at the high end in these sort of sales, but I think I hit the jackpot with this one. Any thoughts at what this coin can fetch, and where is the best place to sell it. If you say ebay, should I sell it on the french or american site? ty
I think Krause has it very undervalued since it is listed at 1,600 Euros at MA coin shops, trouble is I cant tell the grade, but can tell that the coin displayed is AU or UNC at best, and certainly not MS-60 or higher/
Just looked that up in my Krause book... that's quite a rarity that I was unaware of. Definitely going to be keeping my eyes open for those now. Amazing values for an aluminum bronze piece! I recently found a 1905 French 10 Centime in a junk bin (22 cents for it). It's only in G8 to F16 condition, but that was also a pleasant surprise when I looked up its mintage and value. There are some really strange spikes in the French series.
20 Franc 1954 B France Cant give a pic right now because I sent it off to be graded. Another hot coin is the aluminum 1 franc piece, cant remember if it 1942 (believe it is) or 1943--be careful though, it has too have lady liberty on it instead of the double axes. There is also a lot of garbage in the french series, some of the coins over 120 years can be worth nothing. After 1954 B 20 francs, I dont think there is anything of value unless you get into the gold pieces and perhaps some other special silver issues. There are some good values in the colonies, especially the ones that dont exist anymore.
The B & C mint marks seem to be particularly elusive for the 1 & 2 Francs from 1943 and 1944. Tons and tons of those coins came over to the US in servicemember's pockets. But the B & C mints rarely show up in junk bins along the other aluminum coins.
