Just received my Nebraska quarters from the mint and got to admit they were mighty fast in shipment. The finish of all coins is above their normal standard and most of the coins are in realative good shape for circulation minted coins. Now a quick comment or two about the design; If you know anything about that part of the country, you recognize the landscape around "chimney rock'' in western Nebraska. You also know that the Oregon trail is located south of chimney rock, which brings up the next point. The wagon and oxen are apparently traveling the wrong direction (east) as the rock would be looking in a northerly direction. It would be late in the day as the sun is setting in the west. Guess who ever it is in the wagon has been as far as they intended to go and has started back home again to Indiana. Take a look and see if you don't agree that they did the scene backwards!
Dan you just started the next WI leaf quarter. All the coins produced are errors!!!!! Care to jump on this one anyone? Im right behind you
Old Dan Glad to hear the quality is good. I'm waiting for my rolls I ordered the first hour they were available. Are you sure about your directions? I was there last year and there is a pretty good hill to the south that Chimney rock is actually situated part way up. As you are headed to the northwest past it, you would definitely want to be on the north side of it, just as the highway is now. I haven't looked at any trail maps yet but if the trails do pass to the south, they would need to be a ways away from the rock. Of course, the sun would be rising as it would be too late to find camp with it that low in the sky. Just my thoughts. How do you other folks see it?
You may be absolutely right CC. I was kind of thinking that IF I was South of the Chimney, I would be able to see where the North Platte River was located. The country north of the point is fairly low and level where they placed the highway. Way back before thay had dams, that part of the land would have been under water for at least some time every spring when the snow melted and they had their run off. Either way, it makes a good story, and something to think about.
OldDan, The story gets even longer actually. The same point you made in your first post was discussed locally (Nebraska) for awhile. It was finally dropped. The area around the rock must be confusing if you don't live close and you have only pictures to go by. Not you Dan, the easterners perhaps! I happened to be one of the (quite a few) people who submitted the Covered wagon/Chimney Rock with sun concept design and I, having not been to that part of my state yet, got the wagon going the wrong way! Oh well, it has been fun being part of the design process and feel Nebraska did it the right way with public submissions and voting. Always enjoy your posts Dan! CHC
