Hi, I was roll hunting yesterday, and came across this 1990 Lincoln Memorial penny with what appears to be a D over D mint mark. I was hoping someone here could give it a look see and either agree or disagree. I know they went to putting the mint mark on the dies in 90/91, but this one sure looks doubled to me.
Having taken a few more pictures of this coin (and having looked up plate split doubling), I can see where you would say that that is what happened. Just for a bit better clarification, I have (what I think is) a better pic. View attachment 134284
I had a coin like this too when I first started collecting and thought the same thing. but 1990 was the first year that the mint had the mint marks included in the master die making it impossible to have RPM's.
I knew that, but I was hoping... Heck, they said all the pennies in 1959 had memorial reverse, til the secret service said that at least one was authentic... lol
I guess it could, in theory, be possible. They would have had to use a Philly die and punch the mintmark by hand. It would be easy to tell though by the positioning, being different than all the rest of the '90D's.
