    why would they gold plate a 1918 20 centavo?

    Because now it's GOLD and because that's a $10 coin before the plating due to the condition!

    well and I think yes ,because the value become less. Is not desirable to all major collector that the original coin to be plated by gold, platinum, etc.

    usually here in the philippines they use coins for weddings and they usually gold plate coins.

    Because, maybe, the blasted thing spent so much time residing in Manila bay during the war? Trying to cover up the effects of salt water damage? Just a thought......:)
