I find that this 1926 Mercury Dime NGC MS66 has attractive toning. It has a nice array of colors and it flows nicely around the edge of the coin. What do you think?
I would still pay a slight premium for it, but the general "imbalance" of the colors doesn't make it attractive for me.
I don't know...I'm not a toning fan but it seems to have a Christmasy feel to it. Green, red, gold, silver. As for the premium...I am not sure it would draw much because of that toning.
Im not so much concerned about it commanding a premium, Im more concerned with it being considered unattractive and difficult to sell at its greaysheet price. This dealer is asking $350 for this coin. Numismedia says its $463.
I like this type of toning, and to me it would add value to a coin (+5% to +15%). The only negative is it appears to be a bit splotchy, so the added value is not as excessive as it would be for a coin with such color but less splotchy. I hope that makes sense and it is IMO, of course.
p.s. I missed that it was graded NGC 66...that's a dangerous grade. Be careful. I'm not sure of the premium from 65 to 66 (or what kind of price is being asked for the coin), but this is a coin (NGC 66) that many a collector has been "taken" on in the past, in my experience and that of others I know. p.p.s. I still like the coin and its look.
Personally, I like it, the red is pretty vibrant and it has other colors inside it which ring around the coin.
well kinda torn..its not unattractive but really doesnt do anything for me ...btw look at the spot right in front of her nose
Oh goodness! Could you please educate me on the NGC MS66 stories that you know of? I am still very new to collecting and have not yet heard any accounts of NGC MS66 coins having issues. The difference between MS65 and MS66 is about $250. Numismedia has MS65 @ $200 and MS66 @ $463. The dealer is asking $325 and I offered $275. Thanks
I'll bet the coin has several different looks at different angles to the light. I can't decide if I like it or not from the one set of images.
When it comes to toning...to me eye appeal trumps all. This coin has some very nice color...but it seems very blotchy to me. I don't think I would buy this coin. The color is nice, but I just don't care for how it looks. But, some people really like it...toning preference is different to everyone.
I hear what you are saying Camaro. The more I look at this coin the more I like it. It reminds me of Jackson Pollock paintings... which I also like.
Don't have much time now, but essentially NGC66=PCGS65, so if use the price guide for a 66, be sure to factor this into the equation. You might view Heritage archives, pay attention to the relative price of NGC &PCGS in 65 and 66 grades, and draw your own conclusions. Net-net: Given the price points, $275 doesn't seem too bad, but I would view the coin as more of a $200 coin than a $450 coin.
You already said you like it. That's all that matters, IMO. You're buying it to keep it, not to flip, right? It appeals to you so go for it. Enjoy it! But I sense you're not committed, thinking about resale value. Your poll shows a pretty strong bias. That should tell you something. Personally, I voted "indifferent". I do like that kind of toning generally. But I don't find it very attractive on that coin. I also think Leadfoot has his head on right. Lance.
I do like the coin and I would like to own it, but you are correct in that I am also concerned about value. I don't want to flip it anytime soon, but I do have the end game in mind and that is maybe being able to turn a profit one day in the distant future if I want to.
