    Hi all,

I have a medal that has something bad on it. How do I remove this something? I am not sure what the medal is made of. I guess alloy of copper with something else. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

You have classic verdigris. If it's not a high dollar medal, VERDI-CARE would be your best option. Based on what I'm seeing, you should get near 100% removal with just a couple drops over the area.

I agree with BT, but since you don't know the metal composition, I'd suggest that you first try just a small drop on the edge (not the rim) to see if it alters the color/patina on the medal.

Thanks for the help! I'll try to treat my medal with VERDI-CARE.

By the way, Chris, what kind of bad thing might happen to the medal depending on its composition? I am 100% sure that the medal has no precious metals. I am just curious. Verdi-Care people mention no harm irrespective of metal, though they warn not to treat proof coins.

I was thinking more in terms of metals like bronze, copper or brass. I have about 1000 medals that date from the early 1800's to modern day, and the patina can vary for any of the aforementioned metals from bright golden bronze/brass to red-brown to rich chocolate brown. I'm not sure if it will have any detrimental effect or not, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
