Very cool find! That's the first stage of a full cud IMO. The die started to crack and that part was in the process of starting to break off. I have NEVER seen a cud at that stage.....CONGRATS!
excellent coin. i saw that on Ebay, and your previous post here about it. It is unlisted in 'The Cud Book', and you got it for a very fair price. Unfortunately, these are rare coins in low supply, but there is very low demand too. Here's my favorite cud, an 1872 problem free VF30. This is what they look like when the die breaks off in a section.
