Hello team! I came across a 1970-S cent today in my change. Looking through my Redbook it says something about a high and low "S". Which one would this be? I hope you can tell with this picture. I know the coin looks a little nasty, I'm just curious to know which one this is, it's hard to tell the difference in the pictures Redbook has. Thanks for any help.

  4. It's kind of hard to tell with the angle of your picture. My guess would be large date. If you could get a photo directly above looking down at the face of the coin it would be easier to tell.

Also try this link. Good photos of both large and small dates.

    Happy hunting

I agree it is hard to tell from the angle that the picture was taken. But I actually think he may have found a 70 s small date. I am currently about to complete 200 complete sets of BU memorials from 1959 to date. Most of the coins I have, I pulled out of coffee cans my grandmother had stockpiled. I found almost everything I needed. Shes had these coins for so long, I actually found alot of early BU memorials. I also set aside every coin with a date that has multiple varieties or Double dies. I searched through about a pound of 1970 S, and only found 2 Small Dates. Like I said, it is hard to tell from a picture, but in the large date variety, the zero is a tad higher than the seven is. On the Small Date variety, the Zero is at about the same heigh, if not the slighest bit lower.

  6. Ok DJP7x0s,

After digging out one of my small dates and photographing it at the same angle, I am inclinded to agree.

Good find NICK66. I had to dig through hundreds of 1970 mint sets to find mine.

    HI
If the 7 is lower than the 9 it is a large date go to the KEN PORTER LINK AND YOU CAN SEE IT. GOOD LUCK THEY ARE OUT THERE I HAVE FOUND ONLY ONE KEEP SEARCHING.

Okay, after seeing the pictures on the Ken Potter site, this one looks like a large date as the 7 is not level with the 9 in my opinion.

Some angles it looks level, other angles it doesn't look level.

I just took a small piece of paper across the top of the 7 and it does appear to be lower than the 9. Not much, but slightly. I'am 99% sure this is a large date.

Don't ya just love coin pics - now I gotta change my mind :rolling:

Based on the new pic - #167, I think that's the best - I'd have to say it is a large date.

For sure that is a large date. Low 7.
As already noted check out the coppercoins.com web site for great photos of such coins and an explanation of what to look for.

    1970 S

I just happened to get a 74-s and a 70-s in change today. I think by the links in this thread my 70-s is a small date. I,ll have to look at it under a glass when I get home to check it better. I'll try and scan it also.

Thanks again for all of the responses here.

Hey viper, how many Dodge's do you have? I have an '85 Shelby Charger. Is that a Shelby Daytona or an Iroc in your avatar? Later.

    scans

I got some scans, but it's a little strange . In hand it looks like the tops of the numbers are even, but the scans don't. The scans are not real great, but see what you think.

you guys are doing this the hard way. This will sound weird, but forget about the date. Its easier to look at the RTY of LIBERTY to determine the large vs. small date 1970 S cents.

The RTY appear smaller and weaker on the small date cent. The one shown in this post is the large date variety.
