one thing that has really annoyed me is when i hear of people sending old coins for melt, they are an important part of history and should be preserved for posterity. i have an english commonweath 1/2 groat which is in rather poor condition but it is silver with some detail evident. it does not form part of my collection as i have an XF example but, i would never for one moment consider sending this coin for melt. the aesthetic value is far greater than the monetary value to me.
Many coins for one reason or another were produced in massive quanties. Way more than what was needed for commerence at the time would you have a problem with cull grades of those being melted?
Everything begins and ends in it's time. Those old worn coins that nobody wants to collect because there are an abundance of ones in better condition probably should be recycled and made useful in some manner. IMHO gary
