So I started collecting notes and bills and am now getting into coins... but I know, well, diddly squat about them. I have been looking at buying these, but I dont know if they are fake. I have been doing some research of my own, and I am almost thinking they are real. But I heard there are alot of fakes or tourist coins made of these. here are some pictures. could anyone give me any info. They look more like the real coin then most of the fakes I have come across.

Can't tell the size of the coin from the photos but it appears to be a 1792 Mexican escudos (gold) of either 1, 2, 4, or 8 escudos(can't see a number near the shield).

There are a lot of replica "pirate coins" made of light-weight metal sold to tourists in Florida and the Caribbean that are of this type, but would normally be stamped "REPLICA" or "COPY" (unless a Chinese fake with no marks).

Other than "feeling" the weight, you can measure weight on a digital scale.

A real coin of this type is:

8 escudos - diameter approx 37 mm, weighs 27 grams.

4 escudos - diameter approx 34 mm, weighs 13.5 grams

2 escudos - diameter approx 27 mm, weighs 6.77 grams

1 escudos - diameter approx 20 mm, weighs 3.38 grams

If it turns out to be real, congratulations (assuming you got it at a good price).

Don't be too quick to write off this coin. So far, nothing you or anyone has said is convincing enough proof. Odds are that it is a fake (1792 seems to be a common year on faked coins) but you should weight it for the final answer. If you don't have a digital scale, take it a jeweler or coin shop and ask them to weigh it for you.
