Hi all Was wanting some info on this coin. Who is the Emperor and what date are we looking at. Is this common coin? Thanks in advance
Well, if the coin is real then this info sums it up. But dont get too excited on value as yours doesnt have the details the link below has. http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=4212 Im thinking your coin is fake :/
I am not much of an expert in these either, it will be interesting when those experts in these post. My first impression is that the coin Mat linked was a Sestertius, and your coin appears to be made from orichalcum, (brass), which would be the worng metal. Maybe they made these as another denomination as well? I simply do not know. Without closer pics, to me it would be hard to determine if it is a cast fake or not. Chris
To my knowledge the coin is genuine and was unearthed in the city of London sometime in the 1950's during the excavation of some foundations for a new building. Am I correct in thinking the coin is made from brass? Thanks for the info btw.
Actually I was wrong, sorry. Sestertius were made of orichalcum, I was thinking only dupondius were. Since your coin appears orichalcum, and looks like what Mat linked, that part looks correct. Sestertius was the largest base metal coin the Romans made, and are extremely collectible and desired. If it is correct, (and to my untrained eye appears to be by your photos), its value would be north of $100, how far north depending on relative scarcity and condition. Better photos really would help. Chris Edit: Btw Johnny, posting pics of this coins in Ancient and World coin category maybe would get you responses from experts in the field. Lord knows I would never consider myself an expert in Early Imperial Sestertii. There are many on the board, though, who are, but mostly check that section.
