Might be a fun buy for a history buff...

No affiliation, but I just noticed this set of Notgeld items come up on eBay - 90 pieces from Germany, France, Austria. Depending on the final price, it could be an awfully fun purchase for some one.

I did a brief search of these and I am still not exactly sure what they are. Can some one educate me. Thanks.

These are "emergency money" notes, typically created within small localities, when central banks were unable to provide the service. I have a writeup of the French version of these, at http://www.frenchbanknotes.com/france.php?page=6

Thanks for the info. I thank they are interesting. Do they actually hold value or just interesting examples for a collection?

Most of these you could literally buy for a dime a note until a few years ago. THe Austrian still for th most part have not increased but the German notes seem to be selling for about a buck a note. Some of the notes shown in the ad are not actually not geld though. There is some military scrip mixed in.

They're no different from any other banknote collectible, other than the starting price for these is quite a bit lower than most. I've seen buy prices increase a bit over the last 15 years or so, for French material, but when you start with a $5 note and it rockets up to $5.75 that may not seem like a huge increase :)

It is a good collection if you're interested in those times and want a pretty cheap entry point. They will not typically be stunning engravings worthy of hanging over your mantel, though.
