So I found this dime at work and it just seemed odd to me.. It's lighter then a normal dime and the rivet edges are missing (hope this makes sence, pretty much there is a gap between the front and back of the dime) I have been keeping it on me for the longest time and kept forgeting to look into it. Have any of you ever heard or seen anything like this? I tried taking pictures of it but a camera phone doesn't take the best pictures of coins.. Any information on or about this dime would be helpful. If you need any other info I would be glad to answer them the best I can.. Thanks, Tiff
Let me guess, the coppernickel clad layers extend out beyond the copper core so it appears to have a groove all the way around the edge. The reeding is gone on the edges of the coppernickel clad layers but if you look closely at the edge of the copper layer you may still see the reeding.
Okay here are some pictures that I took with my phone, they are by far not good quailty but it will atleast give you an idea of what I am talking about... I tried getting as close as I could, sorry for the crappy pictures.. Hope someone can help my with the darn dime.
Just like the obverse and reverse, the edge too can be worn smooth. Actually, it's far more likely to see a smooth edge than a smooth obverse/reverse because of vending machines and whatnot.
Probably an acid job where the clad coin was soaked in acid which dissolved the copper core leaving the cupro-nickel clad layers.
Hummm, well either way I think it's a pretty festive dime so I plan on keeping it even if it's worth less than .10 cents.. Thank you guys for your comments, if anyone has any other info about this dime pleae do tell..... Thanks a Million Tiff
Welcome to CT! I'm not sure what type of phone you have, but here's some tips for taking pics to post in the future. Check and see if your phone has a macro setting (a flower) and hold the phone about six+/- inches away and use your zoom if you have one. The closer you try to get to the coin the pics will get more out of focus, but if you are farther back you can always edit the pics and crop closer. Good luck in searching coins!
