Saw this recently.. any thoughts as to what can do this to a hologram other than opening it up and scraping it? Noting the grade, it seems odd to be in such a questionable slab. And where did the rest of the hologram go? Doesn't seem to be enough residue floating in there..

I know that on some holders the hologram was on the OUTSIDE of the slab.
Some people put a sticky label on it so that they can write pricing codes, etc.
Pull the label off and -- OOPS! -- there goes the hologram too.

Whether or not that's the case here, you'll have to use Cringely's solution if you want to correct it.
He mentioned the charge to do it.
Don't forget there's also S&H (Registered) both ways to add to the cost.

I will note that this happening is quite common and normally has little effect on the value of the item. It is usually cheaper to wait until a larger goup of them can be reholdered together, than to send in one item.

The NGC slabs from 1988 to August of 2000 had holograms on the outside of the outside of the holder that were not well bonded to the plastic. Stickers placed on them by dealers typically would rip the hologram off when they were removed. When NGC went to the half width holograms in 2000 most of that problem went away. When the full width holograms returned in 2004 they were bonded to the plastic mush better and the torn holograms is pretty much a thing of the past.
