I was searching a couple of Grant Rolls and found this? Look at the 11 o'clock position of Grant's Ear I'm not sure what, if anything ,this is and haven't heard or read anything about this. What do you think. Second photo is what a regular one looks like.BTW, Just got a new Canon EOS and I think once I learn how to use it, I'm going to love it!.
That portion of the photo is too small to be 100% sure, but it looks like something may have gouged it and pushed the metal to the right. Chris
My first thought was PMD, but now that you found more of them and if they all have the same mark in the same exact spot then it would have to be something in the die. Probably a small die chip.
I can't quite tell from your pictures if the mark is identical on each, but it's very possible that it's a die chip since you have multiple coins in your roll. I've gone through quite a few OBW rolls and when I see distinguishing characteristics (die chip, grease filled die, die cracks, Type-B reverse, etc) it's not all the coins in the roll, but usually just about a quarter of the roll. I find this interesting...I had thought that if there was an anomaly, it would be on every coin in the roll...but that's not the case. My "guess" is that the mint runs multiple presses and mix the output before bagging. The bags are sent off to be rolled and, by then, the coins are fairly well mixed up so only about a quarter of them are from any one die pair. That's just a guess on my part, hopefully someone who really knows will take some time to explain it.
