Tomorrow is my birthday and I have recently started coin roll searching and began coin collecting. I have started a couple of common coin books( i.e jefferson nickel books and penny books.) However i want to purchase a coin tomorrow for my birthday at my local coin shop for myself since it is my birthday.:p maybe something between 30-50$. What is a good coin to purchase for someone starting to collect? Suggestions?

I would get an American Silver Eagle. I remember when I got my first one and I would pull it out of my hiding spot (didn't want anyone to break in and steal my silver hoard) and stare at it all the time. I thought it was the most beautiful coin I had ever seen. Plus until the day I bought it I had never seen an ounce of silver so that was a bonus for me as well. I could tell people I owned an ounce of silver! That was a long time ago but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I think this is a great idea. Plus, I assume you are fairly young (could be wrong)...but if you were born in 1986 or later, you could get one from your birth year. I think that would be a great thing to get for your birthday. Sadly for me, I was born in 1985 so I missed it by one year.

    +1 for American Eagle.

Truly a gorgeous coin and excellent tribute to numismatic heritage.

I think everyone is referring to a silver eagle. They should be right around your price range.

    Happy Birthday!!!

I went with all of your guy's advice. I purchased a 1994 (my birth year) american silver eagle. I payed 3$ over spot for it. It is a BEAUTIFUL coin! Thank you for the wonderful suggestion. :D

Happy Birthday: Everyone seems to think that the ASE is the way to go. I think
you should go for the ORIGINAL meaning a nice Walker Half:hail:

Since you are new to collecting coins, my suggestion to you would be to look for a nice Waking Liberty Half Dollar, and embark upon completing a " Short Set " . These are always very popular and affordable and I believe will keep you focussed as well as provide you an opportunity to develop some grading skills. Happy BDAY and have a good time shopping. Welcome to the site.

The ASE was a good choice. But the people who mentioned Walking Liberty Halves have a good point as well. You can get the same obverse design as the ASE, but on a much older coin. Whatever way you decide to proceed with your collection from here, have fun. And Happy Birthday!!

Great job with the ASE! I was going to say maybe you could wiggle some kind of deal with your local coin dealer for a 2 Morgan Dollars for $50. It would net you 1.5+ ounces of silver. For anyone else it would probably not work but since you are younger collector AND it is your birthday you might have just been able to pull it off. In any event, great job getting the ASE. It is a great investment and a cool coin to boot!
